India is part of Asia, but when I think of Asians, I think of people with Asian features like Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asians. I don't think of Russians, Armenians, Georgians, Persians, Afghanis, Indians or Pakistanis as Asian, either, even though those countries are in Asia.
I think of Indians as being from the sub-continent of India.

They are South Asian but also Indo European. As IE maybe you could say they are not Asian and are just a branch of Europeans.

By are current definition of asia yes but its worth noting that we once considered Asians to be middle easterners, Persians, jews etc. India and indians probably need to be reclassified with a new word that sums up those on sub continent of india.

I would think that a DNA test to a sampling of people across India and Pakistan would be in order to see if there is an Asian component in their history to try and settle the question

Geographically yes. Racially no.

Indians, especially from the north, look much more similar to Europeans than Koreans or Chinese.
