Tariffs are simply a tool. They are neither good nor bad by themselves, but for how they are used and what national economic goal you are trying to achieve. The Reagan "free-traders" refusde to deviate from their religious gospel, even though its NOT free trade when exchanging with communist countries; it is NOT free trade if you have a market that's 80% open/20% regulated, and you are dealing with a 55% open/45% regulated market.
It was inevitable that US trade policy had to change - we are operating on a system designed to give preference to European and Asian allies to help them rebuild after WW2 and then win the Cold War. The Soviet Cold war ended in 1991/92, and we should have re-written the global trade rules at that time. Why does Europe have great social welfare and the US does not? We have been going into debt to police the world and provide for the European defense. We shouldn't have allowed China into the world trade system and de-industrialize...
On and on. In typical academic economic models - the consumer pays for the tarriff, so we should see inflation, eventually? But that's not always true - supply side business will often eat rising costs to keep market share, assuming some future point when those regulated costs come down. Sometimes the supply side will eat the costs because of the need to retain security assistance from the hegemon. So YES - tariffs typically drive up prices; but also YES - we were going to have to re-write global trade agreements whether it was Trump or anyone else, or the system would collapse.

Highest number of big business closures in 15 years and the price index is at an all-time high. America won't have much left for Trump to take from us soon with all the losing we do under his reign of terror.
President George Washington warned us to keep our debts to nations paid so, that the deficit doesn’t fall onto future generations….
Ever since Ronald Reagan, we haven’t been sufficiently living up to that warning President George Washington gave regardless Democrat or Republican. It is a failure of all leadership, same as I said about Afghanistan / Middle East intervention.
I don’t care party line, you should care about this because there is a theory going around that IF China ever defeats the buying power of the USD we default on our debt.
What does it mean when we default on our debt? Countries around the world see us as unreliable allies where we don’t pay back after borrowing so much money and resources in which they partner with other nations which will lead us to further ruin.
This is scary sh*t, this administration was elected to fix the economy not put us on a path towards financial ruin. Pay back our debts, stop borrowing, and fix the economy as promised.
Exactly. America has a spending problem. Trump has to spend money to fix all the things that Biden screwed up but hopefully DOGE can continue to find waste and corruption snd Trump and Congress can reduce the budget. Growing the economy through lower taxes, energy expansion and better trade policies will generate more revenue for the government.
We are well on our way to losing reserve currency status & a margin call. Thanks GOP! (Guardian of Pedos)
@exitseven Speaking neutrally Biden was a senile idiot though on debt was actually accumulating same spending as Trump’s first term IF combined with a second term worked out as the first. He actually spent half of the Trump Admin’s spendings even with Ukraine added. With Trump’s second term he’s already outpacing the first and on record to boost deficit more. Biden should’ve fixed deficit just as Trump should’ve. Borrow borrow borrow is killing us.
@exitseven
DOUCHE spent 21 billion dollars to save 9 billion dollars (not the other way around). How long do you think this is sustainable?
@DryGermanGuy DOGE revealed almost 200 billion in waste and corruption. It was the congress that lacked the courage to actually cut that waste out of the budget. Everyone has their own little pet projects and all the backroom deals that went on to insure everyone's pet waste project got funded. I do nto blame Elon for being pissed.
@exitseven
Oh, they "revealed" it, huh? What is that going to achieve? My prediction is, all this big bad corruption will lead exactly to the same number of indictments as it does against Biden, Obama, Schiff, Comey, Clinton...: ZERO!
@DryGermanGuy Is showed that there is a lot of waste and they did not even start on the Pentagon. We get the government we voted for. Trump cannot do it all by himself.
@exitseven
Yeah. And since "only the best people work for Trump", this should be an easy task.
@DryGermanGuy Look at all that Trump and his staff did ion only 6 months. They truly are the new Avengers.
Yay, we taxed ourselves $27.7 billion in July. That'll show China who's boss!

Before federal income tax was created about 100 years ago, import tariffs was the only source of income for the federal government. Makes sense to return to that.
@AviatorTom It's not for nothing that the group that is in charge of the tariffs is called "The External Revenue Service". I think that he is thinking about abolishing the Internal Revenue Service
Return to tariffs as a now service economy? That's hilarious!!
Higher taxes and more spending are now what MAGA supports as Trump spent $47B more in July 2025 than Biden in 2024. 20% MORE! The extra $8B the taxes/tariffs brought in barely made a dent in Trumps spending. If only there was a department to improve government spending and efficiency

Pepper, can you tell us what the average tariff is on goods that actually have a tariff on them, and if that tariff is higher or lower than you expected? An average trade-weighted tariff would be best.
Also, is it possible that the producers and/or importers are eating some of the cost of the tariffs?
They did. They absorbed what they could. Pre stocked before implementation. Thats over.
We've gotten to a place where Republicans are cheering for tax increases and Democrats are cheering for tax cuts. In 10 years will Republicans be advocating for universal healthcare and Democrats opposing it?
Why would you make two and three both so enticing.
Gotta keep the non USA people in the game!
I for one as a nonAmerican outside America, can only think to myself - well, good for them - and secondly - don't stock markets eventually go up and eventually go down in value 📉📈📉📈 stock markets
So of course, I voted 😄 A
It’s only winning if it pays down the deficit and goes to good use because we are all paying for it in some way
No. Just losing. There are better ways.
I haven’t seen any yet, but you won’t know unless you try, inflation is out of control anyway
Yes, it is getting money into the treasury, encouraging new factories to be built in the US resulting in more jobs. most of the sellers are absorbing the tariffs to stay competitive with American goods. Inflation is remaining low.
For now.
Trumps hand is firmly up your backside.
@dustybiker2 I call them as I see them
You should change your vantage point from time to time. It's good to have a well rounded perspective.
@dustybiker2 I just look at the facts.
@exitseven
When presented with the facts you counter with what trumpet spews.. which aren't facts.
@dustybiker2 Everything I say is factual. The stock market is at record highs, inflation has gone down since January, we have the most secure border in history. More people entered the country illegally in one day in 2024 than entered during the whole month of July 2025, the price of gas is the lowest since Trump was in office 4 years ago, . ICE agents are not grabbing people off the street randomly, They have deportation orders for them. Doing it this way is the safest way to do it. If they are armed there could be a shootout and civilians could be hit.
I believe you believe that.
@dustybiker2 it is fact.
That is his desired propaganda
Tell the White Rabbit I said hi @exitseven
@dustybiker2 @DrPepper12 The last time I told him that I was sick of his fucking lies and forced him to provide a source, what he came up with ended up invalidating every single one of his claims. 😆
Paying more at the stores sucks but America desperately needs the tariff revenue it brings in monthly.
So why not try progressive taxation?
Ok. Sure Jan
Sorry to say, but Americans put this IDIOT in the WH. Good Luck getting him OUT!
Wait, you're claiming that taxes on a business get passed onto consumers? So the corporate tax rate should be 0%, right?
Statistics produced by those that want to line their pockets
It's just a GAG question for a gag 😂
What is with these poll options? I’m starting to think that you’re on the autism spectrum
If that is the only stat that matters, then it is not wining. It is more complicated than that, however. So you oppose tariffs? You like how NAFTA lowered them?
Securing the border and deporting some mob of millions is sure winning.
Illiteracy is rampant among the MAGAs. Check out the pic with vertical lines. Look up vertical if you must.
Those dumbf**ks don't care !!!
That federal gov has so much $ it’s not even funny.
No. But... Forget it. You wouldn't understand
It's THIRTY- SEVEN TRILLION in debt largely thanks to America's obscene war, I mean, DEFENSE budget !!!
Try me. I’m no Trump worshipper
OK, boy-o, exactly where do you differ with the MAGANs?
@beefcakebradybatson you don’t remember? I always speak out against Mr orange. I’m an independent
Trump is winning. Full stop.
You said nothing about Biden’s inflation so stfu
If you mean COVID inflation that is neither Trump nor Biden fault. Inflation follows pandemics even if JC himself is POTUS.
Prove me wrong. Any period in history. Any economic textbook.
Biden (& Trump, states, companies, consumers, etc) are all responsible.
Too many dollars chasing too few goods. It's simple & an economic law.
Ofc...
Hasn't made a DENT!
Consumers pay
Absolutely.
Yep!
