Overkill was assassinating a man because you don't like his words. The image isn't funny. A flag at half mast means something that is definitely not funny has happened.

I think we need to stop finding humor in horrific acts or how people react to horrific acts, like say a MacDonalds that chooses to do an act like this in response to a horrific act.

What's the best way to say this? The flag code is important in of itself by following tradition. The Mc Donald flagpole is no different then a schools flagpole or a government building flagpole. There's a flag pole and they are following protocol and it is meaningful for everyone in the community.
