Because that would be too easy for him. He needs to spend some time in prison being the bitch of all the other guys there who loved Charlie.

I personally think life in prison is worse than the death penalty. Imagining spending 23 hours per day inside a small room for the rest of your life or for many years which is what a lot of prisoners do. That would feel awful.
