Approximately 4 million people in a typical month will lose some or all of their SNAP food benefits once the changes are fully implemented, based on Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates.[2] They include families with children, older adults, people with disabilities, and veterans. Implementation decisions by both the federal and state governments could mitigate some harm from the law’s cuts or make them worse. A complicating factor in implementation is that the megabill does not include effective dates or implementation dates for its major provisions restricting SNAP eligibility and benefits, a departure from Congress’s usual practice. Millions of Low-Income Adults Will Face More Red Tape Due to Expanded SNAP Work Requirement; Many Will Lose SNAP
The megabill dramatically expands SNAP’s harsh and ineffective[3] work requirement in two ways.
Applying the work requirement to additional, vulnerable populations. The law applies the work requirement to older adults aged 55 through 64 and parents with children aged 14 and older for the first time. It also removes exemptions for veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and young people who recently aged out of foster care; these exemptions were added in bipartisan legislation in 2023.
Unless they can document 20 hours per week of work or participation in a narrow set of work activities or prove they qualify for an exemption, these individuals now can only receive SNAP for three months in a three-year period.[4] CBO estimates that about 1.4 million of the people newly subject to the time limit will be cut off SNAP in a typical month when it is fully in effect.
CRUELTY IS THE FEATURE, NOT A BUG!!
Hey, I'm a "Conservative". If it's not happening to me and it's not happening right now, it's fake news. But if I lose my government safety net tomorrow, I'll be back here whining like a sheep being passed around an Evangelical men's retreat.
you sure it wasn't just a system error? cause I used to take ebt and here in my state their system would crash preventing us to use it for almost a day or 2
I have heard of this too.
Good suggestion, thank you.
Still no go on cards working or people picking up.
Making policies that demonize and punish poor people, limiting instead of expanding already insufficient SNAP food benefits, is the lowest of the low—especially in the richest country in the world. And, knowing how many millions and billions they carelessly throw away on stupid shit, that could easily go towards feeding EVERYONE!!… It’s beyond sick! It makes me so mad.
Guns are a right.
Food is a privilege.
Make it make sense.
@DrPepper12 This is why I support the "Free Guns and Ammo for All" program that is being instituted in many areas of the US. What godd are free guns if you cannot afford the ammunition to kill others?
Wait… Americans are hiring someone from the UK to help them get food stamps?
Why are you obsessed with where I live. It just sounds off. If you no longer like me block me.
So dramatic! You’ve mentioned your location openly in the past.
I am mostly interested in knowing if/why and how Americans are hiring private individuals (you or anyone, it’s not personal) to help them obtain welfare and if so, why seek help outside of the country they are seeking the benefits from?
It isn't dramatic. It was honest. Your same Q's were coming off as odd.
Nobody is hiring me for this. I have trained service dogs for the various disabled since 1998, also something I have shared here a lot. My clients are long time and repeat. I have not worked because of illness for some time, but once a client always a client as they are my dogs. If they need help it reflects on my dogs needs so I will help.
Ok, so not to get food stamps but for service dogs. That’s an explanation. I agree, most people who need a service dog are also getting various forms of government assistance. I don’t think those people are the ones losing their benefits. Regardless, I do volunteer work with our homeless population and they are not hungry. We have a list of food banks and “soup kitchens” and three of those food banks have to throw surplus food away weekly. We have a housing crisis, not a food crisis.

It's a reasonable goal to encourage people to take care of themselves rather than rely on government assistance. Food stamps (SNAP) was never intended to be lifelong support, rather a short-term help to get through tough times until something better can be done.
Unfortunately, many people have taken advantage if the system, getting SNAP they really don't need... forever. And the federal government has taken steps to change that, as it should.
Totally cutting off support, cold Turkey, is wrong. It would be better to stage a cutoff over several months, say a 20% reduction each month for 5 months, giving people time to find an alternative, whether that be working or turning to other charities.
@AviatorTom "Unfortunately, many people have taken advantage if the system, getting SNAP they really don't need... forever. And the federal government has taken steps to change that, as it should."
I've always seen you as a level headed more middle of the road politically thoughtful person. This comment makes me lose a lot of respect of you. You are smarter than to believe this lie.
@dustybiker2 As I said in my post, I agree that cutting off benefits is wrong. The problem is that too many people have cheated the system by collecting benefits... forever... that they really don't need, and the government has taken steps, albeit imperfect steps, to resolve that. It also should not be up to the government alone to take care of the disabled. There should be, and are, other organizations to help with that. That's why I suggested a phased approach to removing benefits, to allow time for help from other organizations to kick in. Maybe there should be exceptions for totally disabled people, so long as that can be equitably and fairly done, without risk of fraud.
How do you know that people "cheated the system"? Is that because conservatives say it, or do you know it from your own experience?
If this is the case, and I doubt that it is, since SNAP benefits are so meager and tightly controlled, why are you focused on these instead of theft of a greater magnitude, like defense contractor frauds that cost billions of dollars each year?
Are these "many people" in the room with us now?
You cannot chest the damn system.
People have their cards stolen. That is very common. Especially when being shipped out first time. I know several people who had to have them replaced.
I've walked people through sign up who have communication issues.
Have you helped someone through the process?
*cheat
@AviatorTom What statistics? Can you link to them, please? I want to look at them, thanks!
It's probably cause the dumb ones who abuse the system like to show off they're. I've seen tik tocs of food stamps Americans gloating about it and acting rich. This dumb choice will impact all the innocent on it who need that help as the gov will see that and people will and think 'Hey why are we funding them.' and rather than vetting better a simpler solution is to cut it off. It sucks.
The idea of scamming the system is a political excuse to shut it down and take the money. I have been through the sign up process many times helping people who can't communicate well. It is incredibly hard.
I'm on our version of it in England called Pip, and I do need it and have been through an annoying process to get it. Along with my friend who was rejected multiple times until court finally decided his appeal was correct. So I know it can be hard to get onto, but there is always cheaters.
And I also know someone who shouldn't be but is.
The system for whatever reason is easier for others, and this unfairness happens all the time. I'm waiting for a social housing yet my friend who wasn't classed as homeless unlike me and went onto it after me got given one within a year. I'm here 2-3 years later.
And this unfairness also works for those who don't need it, they'll find a way somehow. Plus my dad works for Universal Credit another benefit system here which I have and see's people daily committing fraud, while those who really need help like a girl he has who really needs to be put on Pip isn't being so.
The system is not fullproof neither is it for US no doubt in my mind on that. And it sucks for those who do need it.
Punishing the most desperate is not the way.
Another FAFO moment like the rural farmers destroyed by tariffs and tRump's trade war with the rest of the planet and the people of Georgia who will NOT be working in a Hyundai plant now. Or the rural White voters who are watching Medicaid funding being cut off and hospitals being closed across the flyover states.
The new rules are IF (big IF) they can work they have to work 20 hours a week OR volunteer 20 hours a week. If they can’t work their benefits are not touched.
There are way too many people who take advantage of the program and I know a few who are. Your people if they absolutely can’t work it’ll get straightened out.
Can you comparatively quantify "many people"? Source?
41.7 million people are on the snap program. If it was only 0.1 % that’s 41,700 people. And I’m sure that number is low. Like I said, I know 2 people who are abusing the system very able bodied but gaming the system. In my opinion. These 2 I know are 2 too many.
These people cannot work for various reasons, and cutting them off is horrendous. They do not cheat the system, it's a pain in the arse to get approved. I've walked a few people through it with all their papers as they have a hard time communicating with people they do not know.
@BadApple69 Do you seriously think that literally making up statistics like this, and then drawing conclusions from the made-up data is going to convince anyone of anything?
At msc545 let’s say those are real statistics … I say they are. Prove me wrong. The point is I used such a small percentage. Where I am sure the number of people who are gaming the system is not in the fraction of percent but several percent if not in the double digits.
Again I know a couple of these people and I bet if you’d be honest you know a few too.
41,700× .1% = 41.7 fool. JFC. Unbelievable.
It's both hilarious and pathetic that you think that if you say something is true, that automatically makes it true. It is especially hilarious when you are quoting what you say are correct statistics.
Provide a link to this crap or stop making claims you can't support. It's also kind of funny that you can't even do a calculation that is correct on your own fictitious data.
Fuck your links. I don’t need to prove shit to you. 1 person that is collecting snap that shouldn’t be on it is too many. I personally know 2.
I used 1/10 of a percent as a demonstration but you guys are too fucking retarded to understand that. There is corruption in all the free give-a-ways that the government takes directly out of my pocket to homeless motherfuckers like you.
It got to stop.
My last post on this subject.
Bye Felicia
in Canada? I thought you were in Canada?
seriously? I'm hearing more people requesting such benefits. not good...
I thought she was in the UK
@TrueConfection People confuse @douride2 with myself.
@dustybiker2
aha... you are correct!
@dustybiker2
what... you ride dirt bikes? no way...
@lightbulb27 Yup. And transitioned into street many years ago too.
@dustybiker2 oh no... so you're a trans biker? There's only two kinds... Dirt or Road. lololllllolll...
joking! Cool!
I prefer dirt... it's softer and less obstacles! bicycle on roads is enough for me.
Ok, so you’re in Canada?
@lightbulb27 Dirt is really hard in the body compared to street. But I live in a hot and dry place.
@TrueConfection @douride2 is from Canada.
@dustybiker2 Get a better suspension:) haha.
yea, can be, but I see guys in their 70's riding it.
@lightbulb27 I actually prefer pit bikes these days. Roaring fun. But still enjoy any good 450 on a moist trail.
oh lordie no. I don't know your size but problem is suspension. I've seen too many leg injuries people playin on those. Get a bike that fits. Really like the.. E bikes. Like Stark Varg is amazing. The noise is sadly missed, but everything else is not... air filters, oil changes... Put them in put put mode like a pit bike or blast faster than a 450. Very versitile! I still run ICE bike but will be converting...
You don't need a 450... lol:)
If their disability’s check is over a certain amount too high. That is only people having snap food cancelled most cases just lowered
New rules... I can only hope his masses in his base cause him to taco.
@dustybiker2 So the underlying causative principle for denying benefits in all of this - according to US conservatives (and perhaps others) is not so much that people might be cheating, it instead is that those who do not work or are disabled are regarded as being *** Genetically Inferior*** and as such must not be allowed to live or reproduce, and this is a serious belief heald by many conservatives.
I know they say it's about cheating, but let's face it - a LOT of them cheat too, and in a big way $$$$. They also say that their obsession with immigrants is due to the alleged illegality, but we really know it is all about SKIN COLOR.
The fact that they are smart enough not to admit these things does not mitigate the wrongfulness of their behavior one bit.
He is making the world better for the rich and worse for the poor. There is no middle class people anymore
Maybe if we get rid of our border again and let in another 20,000,000 foreigners, that would solve all your issues.
Thar is not helpful
It just saves the republic and culture... at least for a while until another leader opens the flood gates again.
I find immigrants more helpful and less harmful. But immigrants have nothing to do with this issue.
@msc545
It might be more.
The fact you don't seem to care and don't seem to realize this destroys your country, society and culture.
This is the most pressing issue facing the country. Above all others. You have to have a country first then you can deal with all of the sub issues facing it. If you are actively destroying the country then it makes the rest moot.
@msc545
So you have lost all sense of reality and truth.
Getting rid of a country's border and letting endless millions from different cultures move in who don't want to join yours but change yours to theirs.
Men can become women and should be welcomed into our daughter's locker rooms and their sports teams.
It is mean to put people in prison so let's let law breakers out endlessly in our cities and ignore the safety of our citizens.
You've proven yourself to be delusional and you are a threat to the well being of the country.
So I gather that you have absolutely no idea where 20 million people are correct?
I live in Los Angeles which is a city of less than 20 million people and it is huge. I guarantee you despite your impaired assessment of this that an addition of 20 million people to the United States large, as it is would not go unnoticed by all of us, including you apparently. So you keep throwing your crazy numbers around and the rest of us will keep shaking our heads and wishing that you would use better drugs.
He doesn't care
He will play stupid
He will blame the democrats
Why are they taking snap benefits tho, I'm too lazy to read your link 😂
@ChicoFromThe305 Did you read the Q? Dork.
Yea still doesn't give a logical explaination on why they are taking poor people's benefits lol
Oh. Sorry. Misread your comment.
It's because of the passing of Trumps death bill. People said it won't actually take from the poorest citizens.
As of today it is.
And banished the freak. Bye @Salmonella or whatever your name was.
Trump will eithr deny it as will his followers - or react with indifference.
It's bad for humanity but the rich dgaf
were these clients somehow illegal aliens?
Really?
He's actually sincere. IK, IK.
@exitseven No. I'm done wasting time on you.
@dustybiker2 you are afraid to find out that they were either ilegalsaliens or welfare cheats/
@exitseven Look at yourself right now. You make me realize what a waste of life I've spent on you.
@dustybiker2 This is the world we live in. Everyone is a victim and everyone has some kind of scam going. People say I am cynical but I have just seen too much.
