I assume you are referencing the Dinka people, in South Sudan. Who's men do not average 6'2 but 6'. Making them the undisputed tallest people in Africa. Still shorter than the tallest European or Asian countries, but a worthy competitor.

I think the whole idea of black, white, Asian etc is a little silly. As a Scandinavian I am genetically closer to some Asian countries than I am to say, Southern Italians. Of course we will see similar situations play out in other ethnicities. All the more so with a giant continent like Africa, which's sheer size is often forgotten because of how we made the seafaring maps. This wasn't propaganda or anything, but a to-scale map is surprisingly difficult for sea travel.

The very wide sweeping race thing is just an initial category, and arguably dated and not very useful.

The Dinka tribe that you reference are tall, not nearly as tall as you claim, but tall. This is typically attributed to better diet, meaning early use of dairy and especially milk just like other tall populations. And further made a big deal by a more polyamorous community that idolizes height. Their height preference being, presumably, reinforced by comparison to the other much shorter neighbours.

For reference, if we overlook the Dinka then men in South Sudan are actually quite short by western standards.

Colonizers, mostly. The obvious physical differences had ignorant explorers and conquerors thinking that people who look very different must be a different race or species entirely. It only stuck in multicultural societies once we were better educated because it’s a concise way of expressing a fair bit of information. Even smart people are lazy. Like it or not, it’s useful as well. When we’re trying to locate a missing person, catch a criminal or identify a body, physiological differences between races become very useful to investigators. Being all sensitive about it doesn’t really help anyone.
