The GOP has abandoned their core principles. They used to be for lower taxes and now they keep raising import taxes to historically high levels. They used to be strong supporters of free market capitalism and pro business but now they are meddling in private companies (Intel, MP, Lithium Americas, Lockheed Martin) by taking a stake in them which is a very socialist move. Foreign investment comes with stipulations that the US government gets a percentage of the profits like China does with foreign investments. Republicans used to manage the economy better than Democrats but the shift from free trade to isolationism/protectionism has frozen the US out of global trade and is wreaking havoc on US business. The party of conservativism has transformed into the party of socialism and a rift is forming. The only thing keeping them alive is that the Democrats are in even more disarray.
