I have had this happen to me many times. More so a guy tries to add me as a friend, even though I have no clue who they are. Usually I say "hey" back to them, and then inquire as to how I know them. I get kind of annoyed when the guy is just adding me to see if I will go out with him. Because I just don't think Facebook is a dating site. If you want to find a girl, go out and find one or go use an online dating site. Trying to pick up over Facebook comes across as creepy and desperate, at least from my experiences that is what it was like :S At least on a dating site or at a bar, you are expecting it. Not on Facebook where you are just trying to connect with your friends.
I had one guy who was 40 something, claimed to be going to Harvard University, and had all female friends under the age of 30, lots of young beautiful women. He added me, and there is no way I knew him. I sent him a message asking how I knew him, and he said "you don't ;) Can we be friends plz? ;) :)" Obviously just looking to see if he could find a girl to cyber with him. Incredibly creepy.
I also had a guy who lived a few hours from my home. He had 2 people as mutual friends of mine. I was not single, but he was and he kept sending friend requests. I finally blocked him, and told him to stop adding me as a friend because I didn't know him. I had already talked to him and it was clear he was just trying desperately to get me to be his girlfriend, even though I already told him I was seeing someone and not interested.
I'm 22 by the way :P So ya, those are just a couple of my experiences with this kind of stuff. I usually just try to talk to them and find out how I know them. If it is a friend or someone in my class, usually they just want notes or to know something about a friend of mine. So usually it's cool but I get a lot of creepers too :S
okay. I don't mind random people talking to me if they make it clear they're not creepy or anything lol. But I HATE (as do many other girls) when someone just says "hey." That is totally uninteresting and then it's kind of like a "you choose something to talk about" conversation. Unimpressive. So, I would probably respond, but I wouldn't be really stoked on it. I'm 21 and randomish people have talked to me, mainly one who became a pretty good friend. But like I said, don't be creepy and don't say "hey" unless you're going to follow up with something quickly

Normally most people add me due to fact woman are attention magnets I try and only add really hot ones that don't have 1,000 friends more likely to chat.
If you get who ru just try and be nice say you were suggested and saw that she had a pretty smile and she looked like a cool person.
One girl asked me if I was a witness I thought that was a trip to a murder to an accident wooo weird, just said I don't think so I'm a witness to your beauty hah. Anyways that was weird we didn't add each other.
I tried this once. I pointed out our mutual friend, a shared interest, and introduced myself. It wasn't enough to overcome the weirdness. She didn't not answer, but she certainly made no effort to keep the conversation going. I can only fill the empty space between one word answers so long.

This used to happen to me a lot til I made it that only friends can message me. Most of the guys were foreign, and they used to just constantly 'poke' me or message me random things. This one guy from a place in Africa messaged me and gave me his phone number which was like 20 numbers long, and told me to call him. I just thought it was funny that he thought out of all the people I'd waste money calling it would be some random dude from a different country that I've never met or spoken to before. Yea right! :/ I also used to get a few middle eastern guys who would try to add me or talk to me, I never did though. I don't really have much trust for guys over the internet, why else would you message a random girl you don't know unless you're a creeper? If we have mutual friends and they actually live near me that might be different, but I don't really have any inclination to speak to strangers on the internet.
I would ask him how I knew him, and if It didn't ring a bell I wouldn't really talk to him.
Its easier to pick up random girls as friends, but its a bit more weird to have random guys saying hi and wanting to be "friends." I kinda start to wonder why they are friending me/talking to me- because if the situation were reversed, I wouldn't find a girl that I didn't know, with mutual friends and start talking to her just because she looks "cool." So because of that reasoning, I usually think guys who are randomly messaging me have a motive.
i was 17. when I had something kind of like this happen. I didn't know the guy at all, no mutual friends, he lived in a different state. He sent me a message and said "hello there :)" so I checked out his profile to make sure he was a real person with real friends and such. Then I sent him a message back saying "Hey, How do I know you?", then he said we didn't know each other, but he would like to know me. I then told him that I didn't think that would happen. He kept the conversation going, and we messaged back and forth for a couple weeks then I accepted his friend request. We then started texting some, and flirting a lot, talked on the phone a little, skyped a couple times, nothing ever came between us though.
I've gotten a lot of friend requests from guys who I've never met before and messages from guys telling me I'm cute. Usually I ignore the requests and delete the messages. A few weeks ago I hit the accept button instead of ignore and a minute later I get text messages from the guy telling me how cute I am, I ignore and delete the messages and a few minutes later I start getting messages on Facebook asking me if I have a boyfriend. Weirded me out a little, told him I did to get him to lay off and then he just starts going on about how he wishes I was his girlfriend. Needless to say as soon as I got to my computer he was deleted and I took my phone number off the page, I pay a lot more attention to what I do on fb now.
I would say hi back.
But if he doesn't put any effort into the conversation, I won't reply anymore.

The weirdest one I got was this guy that said his Wife died and he had a daughter and wanted to have a family again... Actually a huge speech, I said sorry Hope you find someone...
i learned the hard way , that people who say who they are , might not be who they are, i.e they could be getting fraped by a mate - I generally don't trust Facebook anymore after an incident that happened last week. Best thing is to not reply unless you are good friends with them.
If there's a solid mutual friend list, its probably safe to say I've met them. So it'd be chill.
But in the past all the "hey" messages I've gotten from guys have been either several states away or from the Middle East area...and I'm usually just baffled as to how they found my profile in the first place...its was bizarre after this happened multiple times. One of them I had a decent conversation going with for a while.
I would reply him 'Hi'. If he's attractive, its more probable to happen, to be honest.
This happened to me last year. The guy was from another continent and he send me 'hi, wanna be friends?' I told him yes, sure. Why not? (btw we had no mutual friends, actually I don't know how he found me on fb, but whatever). We have had many nice conversations since then, we have some things in commom.

Um, I'd talk to him back. Like...there's this guy on Facebook, who lives in California and I have no idea who he is, who randomly added me one day and was like "your taste in music gives me a boner". I thought it was pretty funny actually (although yeah, a little creepy), we've talked on Facebook a couple times and it's always pretty entertaining.

Back when all MySpace fans finally gave up and transitioned, random friend requests from friend-hoarders happened a lot more frequently; even I got some random girls trying to add me and message me. It isn't only the desperate guys. But I don't get them anymore now that my FB account has been untouched and gathering dust for months.
The guy I'm seeing did this and he's turning 22 years old. He started poking me, added me as a friend and started a conversation with me, and look what happened. A simple hey can change a lot you know, and at least you'll know you gave it a try. Go ahead and say hey to this lucky girl, and see what happens!
most of these girls are hostile.. gosh the boy only said hi, he didn't ask you to marry him. Some of these girls are just plain stuck-up. Truly a lack of hometraining.

like this happened to me last week or something. and I asked the mutual friend between us who he was and he said that he knew him(the guy that messaged me) from lacrosse and that they were like brothers.
we are actually pretty friendly now but it was pretty weird at the time too
If I really knew the mutual friends, I would reply. If he was cute, I would reply. If he was older and kinda creepy looking, I would ask if I knew him. If he was just really creepy looking with not so many friends, I would unfriend him..

However, I had just begun a relationship a few months before and my boyfriend (now fiance) is not one to be cool with a random guy trying to strike something up with me.
