What if You Were Born With a Silver Spoon?

This is something I've thought about a number of times. If I were born into an insanely rich family, knowing what I know now and being the person that I am now, would I take advantage of the trust funds? The inheritance? The allowances? And just not work for the rest of my life? Not try to be my own man and try to make it on my own?

I would like to say I wouldn't take it because of my pride, I'd decline the inheritance like a few had done before. But at the same time if its dangled in front of me like that... Would it be possible to say no?

What do you guys think? What would you do?

It's hypothetical and hard to know for sure what someone would do.

I used to know a guy in that situation. He parents were wealthy. He never truly worked. He went to Vegas and spent his money on prostitutes and gambling. He bought 30-40 houses. He was also really fucked up in the head because of it. He felt bad because he had never worked. I think he felt like less of a man because he never worked, had no skills, and never truly supported himself. He saw other men and felt inferior, like something was missing. He was male, but didn't feel like a man like other men.

I knew the guy fairly well because he wanted to work for me. He wanted to do work on his rental properties. He thought it would make him more of a man. But he didn't know the meaning of work. He'd work for an hour or two, then run off to lunch for 3-4 hours, then go to the gym.

He thought that was work. He thought that would build character. He totally didn't get it. He couldn't do ANYTHING, not even the most simple things. I was willing to show him, but he never stuck around long enough. He was on the job an hour or two, but only did maybe 15-30 minutes work. He thought that's what it meant to work.

My parents passed in 2020 21. Left a little over a million in property that I sold and then split in half with my brother. So I got half a million in cash and little bro got the family house and rounded it off with cash.

Took 3 years to handle all of there affairs. So at first I felt bad but over time i can feel the ghost of my parents telling me I've earned it. It's better the family than the government right?

In handling this amount of money this full year now, while its a blessing but not life changing. My guess it's closer to $5 million where you can start doing goofy stuff only after 7 years where it's properly invested and you play around with the invested income.

Anything less of 5 million starting cash and any less planning strategy. You are washed up less then 7 years and dying a pauper. You'd have less stability then a person leaning into social security as the only end of life income.

I've got $500,000 in the stock market. it will take let's call it 20 years to get to "fuck you money."

No one worth there salt or common sense can afford to die modesty without 5 million at 65 by the way leaving basically nothing.

So what are you worried about gaining or losing when the toll to cross is 5 million to die with dignity?

Yeah this is definitely the logical answer. I just wonder though if money had come so easily all throughout our lives, would we be able to work hard without rejecting the billions that essentially trivializes what we'd earn, turning it into monopoly money.

There are far too many examples of rich children just wasting their lives away in drugs, alcohol and debauchery. How can we be sure we won't spiral similarly if we were to accept the charity?

@briamg22 yeah but then I'd have very shady characters, sometimes rich people are as shady as the very poor or deviants.

I have rich relatives. My cousins are my age. They had rich parents. They flew to Europe for vacation and belonged to a country club and went to expensive private colleges. They drove nice cars and they had trust funds. I was jealous of them when I was growing up. Now i see how much more accomplished that I am and maybe I was better off poor.
