Gavin Newsom signs bill to spur housing construction. Thoughts?

Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a bill aimed at tackling California’s sky-high housing costs by spurring denser development near major transit stops in big cities.

“Housing near transit means shorter commutes, lower costs, and more time with family. When we invest in housing, we’re investing in people — their chance to build a future, raise a family, and be part of a community,” the California governor said in a statement.

The bill will require local officials in counties with more than 15 passenger rail stations to OK large housing developments — in some cases, buildings up to nine stories — located within a half mile of such a stop.

The bill, SB 79, weathered intense resistance in the statehouse, and its author, state Sen. Scott Wiener of San Francisco, narrowed it significantly to exclude transit stops with less frequent service. It touched a nerve in wildfire-scarred, car-centric Los Angeles; Mayor Karen Bass had urged Newsom to veto the proposal over concerns about displacement and the loss of local decision-making authority, arguing in a letter it “risks significant unintended consequences for many of Los Angeles’ diverse communities.”

This is obviously aimed at illegal aliens. they will pack them in, thousands per acre. Since they will all be in one place it will be easier to harvest all the ballots.
Instead of this maybe he should concentrate on streamlining the permit process for the people who are trying to rebuild after their homes burned down over a year ago. So far only 620 permits have been approved out of over 1500.

Here is a tidbit of info for you. Your prez just put a 45% tariff on Canadian lumber. That will sure increase the cost of building a house now won't it?

@douride2 The US and Canada has a quota system. The quota has been adjusted up and down over the years but anything over the quota gets a tariff of 200%. or more. I am not sure what the quota is. I can remember American dairy farmers dumping thousands of gallons of milk down the drain. I was a little kid and my father tried to explain tariffs to me but I did not understand.
