Why do people actually believe women were submissive in the old days?

It is true that women had fewer political rights, but we see literature going back to Ancient Times and the Bible about "quarrelsome" and scolding wives. Incels and red pill guys seem convinced that if they only lived in the mid-twentieth century or earlier they could have a wife who was more like a slave girl. Feminists on the other hand like to pretend that their anger is thousands of years of bottled up rage due to one sided oppression. Oppression though is never one sided.

You're right of course. But it's because the economic system was much more oppressive before even the 60's. Women didn't have to be submissive per se. But they still were reliant on a man for a livlihood. Which meant submitting at least in to believed societal role of a woman. And I think whether they want to admit it or not that is what angers SOME guys. Is that a woman today is not forced to be reliant on a man for anything. So if a woman decides she'd rather have a life devoid of men. Or if she wants to treat men as an option in her life, she can.

In general, women of the past were no more or less submissive than they are today, but they were certainly more respectful and appreciative of men.

Having said that, today's women are just as sexually submissive as women of the past. There was a period from the 1970s through the 2000s when women resisted anything submissive, but it just made both sexes unhappy and unfulfilled. Thankfully that faded because, um, biology and nature. Today most women embrace their sexually submissive nature.
