Is this picture racist, read the details?

Question

This woman was at the recent No Kings event. The flag she is carrying is similar to the original but it only has 8 stars, while the real original had 13 stars, one for each colony.

There were 8 northern colonies where slavery was illegal and 5 southern colonies, where slavery was legal.

Is this woman saying she's okay with slavery?

Could it be that's the message the group that made the flag for her, and paid her to be at the event?

Unfortunately, I don't believe that slavery was "on the books" illegal in any of the colonies in the late 1700s. When the Founding Fathers were trying to unite the colonies to declare independence from England, they had to convince the southern colonies that they wouldn't try to make slavery illegal in a new independent country, because most of the southern colonies were content to remain part of the British empire. Ben Franklin was vehemently against this, saying that not dealing with abolishing slavery immediately would "split the country in less than 100 years", but he was overruled by the others, who were a mix of "for" and "against" slavery. Obviously he was correct.

If there were 8 states without slavery and her sign has 8 stars wouldn’t that mean (if anything) she likes the states without slavery? Though tbh I doubt she knew that or that it was why she picked 8 stars, I think it just fit how she drew the sign. JMO!

Of course not. What has slavery got to do with racism? Slavery does and has existed in all races. For a brief period of time in the USA, most slaves were black. Before that, there were white indentured servants. Now, we are all government slaves.

We don't know based on the picture alone. Too bad we can't ask her for clarity. I'm trying not to assume things without learning more that what I can see. I'm not perfect of course we all do that sometimes. That said hopefully she's not being racist but an explanation would be nice.

I don't see how that could be racist. If the 8 stars actually DO represent those 8 colonies, how could that be racist? I'd think it WOULD be if the flag only had the 5 stars that represented the south.
