As well, there's no evidence of anything. pictures of boats blown up and statements of injured is not evidence. Evidence might be family members, records published of missing people. Even that can be lies... I reference the gulf war testimony about babies from Kuwaitis that were lies to promote USA coming in to save them. If you trust what they are saying, then you have some trust in them. Why? They are the ones saying these things...

Gulf of Tonkin did not happen. Clinton fired a tomahawk at bi laden outside of war. Nicaraguan contras? Obama got a bunch killed.

I don't know about sanity in this context, but I do know that all over that area there are plenty of hungry people who are out there fishing quite literally for their dinner. Hunger is a very powerful motivator and I think we are all about to find out about that given that Trump has just cut off SNAP benefits for poor people which I believe is an attempt to provoke food riots, which I believe is his plan for creating recent to put more troops and more cities and ultimately to declare Marshall law. Just my parental hopefully but I sort of suspect not.

And yet my thought about it is that there are plenty of poor people that are doing just exactly that. They don't have much choice.

They use rod and reel to fish. It is not like commercial fishing with nets. Those boats you are referring to are not going to the US - they are too small for that and can't carry enough fuel. It is, at best, a 1000+ mile trip at the shortest without accounting for currents. Those are cheap little boats.

I generally agree with the middle position... should be congress approved and evidence based. But govt has always done this usually not as public and we've had horrible drug problems for decades as we lost the drug war.

If china was doing this in phillipines, it be illegal. it likely wrong or sometimes in error... killing innocents. but could be justified... like taking out the drug running sub reported. I'm not sitting near the big chair, whom is.. it's all filtered through media...

Like many US laws and precedents, it assumes a level of honour on the part of the people expected to enforce it. It's become abundantly clear, from the refusal of Republicans in the Senate to convict Trump either time (even when a majority agreed with the conviction) to the many current situations, that that was too optimistic.

There is no evidence whatsoever that any of those people were drug smugglers, and actually the evidence that is available suggests that they were probably fishermen. Here, as far as I know, fishing is not a crime yet.
