My grandfather fought in North Africa with Montgomery and shipped home to the UK to be deployed on D-Day in 1944. He would have agreed with his comrade.

My grandfather was a marine who fought in Iwo Jima. He said the exact same thing to me about America. It was actually the last thing he ever said.

The war was fought not just for the UK, but for World peace too.

Winning the war, meant an end of genocidal fascist regimes in Germany, Italy, and Japan.

But for Winning the War, we might not be here today, and the UK and the USA would have a different system of Government. Perhaps Germany would be the supreme law of the land, or be split up between the 3 countries.

@Danzigdawson you know my great grandfather's fought the nazis from 1939-45. The communists made a deal with the nazis that enable Hitler's war and divided up Europe between them. Finland, Eastern Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were all invaded by the communists. The communists also supplied Hitler's war machines.

@gwendoline That's right, idiot. Then the nazis broke the pact, invaded the USSR, commited the worst mass killings of the Holocaust in Russia, a genocidal treatment of POWs, lynchings and —after Stalingrad— had their asses handed to them by the red army until the battle of Berlin.

It was an uneasy alliance with a dictator and a regime that was just as bad as Hitler, but in the end, no Eastern front, no easy victory for the allies. Most of Hitler's army died in Russia.

And the US, British supplied Stalin's war machine to make it happen, which in turn helped Stalin conquer and hold on to most of Europe for himself.

@Danzigdawson exactly so what happened in Russia was partly to blame on the communists and only for Britain being already in the war blockading NAZI Germany and Italy as well as supplying the Soviets to keep them in the fight the NAZIs would have won.
Nazi Germany was always doomed to lose, the main reason they went to war was because their economy was collapsing and they wanted to expand it but like Japan and Italy the resources they needed was in the hands of Britain, france, America, the Soviets.
The Allies choose to oppose the Nazis in 1939 but they were also considering opposing the Soviets as well over Finland and baltic countries.
The war would have taken a different turn if the British stayed out of it.

@Danzigdawson Yes, he was captured and sent to a prison camp. He talked about working on a farm and to hear him talk about it , it was the best time of his life. I really doubt that was the case. However one of my customers was talking about his father and mentioned that he was a POW in WW2. He was alspo of Italian decent just like my father. We decided that the two man shoudl meet so we took our fathers to lunch one day and listened to some really grim tales. My customer's father was a corpsman and he said he had to amputate the toes of guys that got frostbite. He did not have any supplies so he had to use a pair of pliers.
My father was not in as bad of a place. He did say that the only time he feared for his life was after the Nazis surrendered. He was afraid that they would kill all of the Americans. He was working out in a field and an American plane flew over the prison camp. He said that everyone just kept their heads down and kept working. They did not want to make the guards angry.
