“We felt less passionate about the war than the other side we were fighting against”. Does this explain why the US loses wars? Accurate statement?

Take the Vietnam War. 20 years strong and we wiped out millions of them.
Yet they still kept going.

Then I guess Americans had enough and decided it wasn’t worth it. Even after all the damage we did, the other side wouldn’t quit for some reason.

Same thing with Afghanistan. We fought the Taliban for so many years but support for their cause never waned.

So at the end of the day, I think the victor of the war is determined by whichever side cares about it more.

Unfortunately I will have to concede that Afghanistan was a loss. Yes, we did get Bin Laden and did cripple Al Qaeda, however the Taliban were also our enemies and have now taken over Afghanistan. For this reason I call it a loss.


In both cases we lost the war because we attempted to install governments that were weak. Think of our country. We did not become a super power in 1790, or 1820, or even 1900. It took a long time from the foundation of this country to become stable and formidable military power. The same is true for any new government. We can’t expect governments to get that stable with our aid that fast.


In Afghanistan we should have simply taken it over, but we always want to be the nice guys at our own expense. Look, if you’ve got people running around your country organizing plots to kill roughly 3000 people in one day, then when asked to turn over Bin Laden you decline…. well screw you. You don’t get to be your own country any more. Why should we loose lives and billions of dollars solving a problem the inept and frankly hostile Taliban government should have taken care of? It shows you can handle running a country, so we’ll just make it ours.


As for Vietnam, again…being the nice guys. We never really attacked the north until 1968. Frankly we should have just made the south ours. Yeah, it probably would have started WW3, but who cares? The spread of communism needed to be stopped and we failed in our attempts to do so there.


It was not a lack of passion that caused the failures in these wars but poor policy. At the very least we should have waged a war of extermination against the Taliban, even if that meant attacking in Pakistan to get them all.
