We were asked by Allies to join in the wars. If you start adding up forward progress areas gained lost progression of end point or just simply the holy fucking hell that is the most epic anything ever moment in the war or the point where the tide turned in favor of the eventual victor. You will almost always find it is a point that untill American soldiers hit the ground it was not looking to good for the eventual winners. If you want to really talk about the wars with someone who has actually been on those front lines or packing his rifle other rifle backup to the backup rifle all the ammo his 2 to 4 pistols as well and stared into Charlie's barrel and got lucky enough to watch the bullet eject from said barrel while in the process of dodging said bullet. On a serious note though:
Korea wasn't technically a war (no declaration and it was the first major UN mission) and also, technically, it hasn't ended yet - they just stopped actively shooting each other.
It's been suggested that they got involved in WW1 & WW2 after being asked for help. Technically the USA was a Neutral country at the outbreak of both wars. They joing 1914-1918 after the Germans "invited" them to by targeting American ships, the final straw being the sinking of the Lusitania. The Japanese extended an invitation to join the festivities of WW2, delivered by their navy to the US base in Pearl Harbour...

Speaking of can't win a war, take a look at your war with the French Revolution, followed by the War of the Third Coalition. That didn't beat you up badly enough, so then there was the War of the Fourth Coalition. Then there was the British invasion of Río de la Plata, where Britain invaded Uruguay not once but twice, and was beaten both times. And that was not due to the arrival of the Spanish military, but simply the local merchants and rich people organizing a militia which beat the British forces. Now back to the coalitions - Britain was fighting France all this time (and losing) and so there was the War of the Fifth Coalition. Okay, we are just into the 1800's and there are still many more wars for Britain to lose, but lets get to the main one that is important here. How did you fare with the American Revolution? Not well at all. Done talking about not being able to win a war?
The places we have been at war in for some time now are places where there was already war going on. We are fighting ISIS, the Houthis, Fatah. the PLO, and many of the sub groups, in most cases with the assistance of many other countries. Those are fights to retain or engender peace, not violence, So I did not describe my country. Are you really that stupid to think that we are trying to keep violence going instead of winning peace over the violent factions? As I said, your country is causing war after war and not for peace!
Just with the US, Britain has lost three wars. The revolutionary war, the Northwest Indian War, and then when you attacked us you lost the War of 1812. And speaking of not winning a war alone, I point out that Britain got into it with Afghanistan in the First Anglo-Afghan War, Started winning, but blew it and retreated due to the Afghan tribesmen constantly attacking and beating Britain.
I would say American has done fairly well in holding against the enemies of peace, but keeps getting hurt by the terrorist forces at play, and since those countries have not decided to get serious about defending themselves, we are pulling out and letting them blow themselves up.

It's hard to win a war when you're not allowed to. Our politicians treat our Army like a police force, and then tie our hands behind our back. It's not about winning, it's about funneling money into the defence industry.
Imagine Tyson knocking someone around in the first round, damn near putting them down. Then, come next round, he is told all he can do is sit on the opponent. No punching, just sit on them. That was Iraq, Afghanistan, and to a lesser extent Vietnam. You can't count Korea as a loss, more a stalemate. Not to mention it was a U. N. mission.
I get a bit defensive on the subject, particularly when Afghanistan is mentioned. I left a part of myself there, and for what reason?
I'd suggest the better path is to avoid fighting unnecessary wars (Korea definitely wasn't unavoidable since Acheson left it outside of the US's defense perimeter, and Vietnam arguably wasn't either).
Vietnam arguably was a strategic success if fighting there kept Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand from going Communist.

To me, Bosnia in 1998 in particular is historically frustrating as an American, because we saved hundreds of thousands of ethnic Muslims from slaughter, and it's never mentioned or discussed, it's never truly been memorialized (the 20th anniversary passed in 2018, and nothing), and it's barely remembered, both domestically and internationally. You would think that maybe some predominantly Muslim nations would hold it in high regard. Nope.

It's one of the top accomplishments of President Clinton's administration, and nothing but crickets from all areas of the political spectrum. It's baffling. I know President Trump got Kosovo, Bosnia, and Serbia to agree to an extended peace deal, but that also goes ignored. I'm sure some of that is because the deal involved Trump, but it doesn't explain the lack of recognition of the Bosnian War prior to Trump's involvement in the treaty. Trump could've also recognized the 20th anniversary of the Bosnian War in 2018, but did not. A missed opportunity.

I agree with your overall assessment of the military, both good and bad. It should always be a properly trained fighting force. If we're going to fight somewhere, it should be out of necessity, and we should fight to WIN, not "hang around". It does no one any good when we get bogged down in ridiculous never-ending "nation building" efforts that the people for whom the efforts are being made, don't want any of those changes anyway.
As for scaling down our military presence around the world, I can find both praise and gripes. Finally leaving Afghanistan is the absolute correct move, but I was against the drawdown in Northern Iraq. The Kurdish forces have been dedicated allies for years, and leaving them with less support was not the right move. Meanwhile, the fact that we did nothing when the Diet Soviet Union invaded Crimea was a travesty. President Obama allowed it to happen on his watch, President Trump did nothing to address it during his administration, and President Biden has also done nothing about it to this point. I would've bombed that new bridge between the Diet Soviet mainland and Crimea the moment the first stone was set.
