6 moNot too surprising. They wanted to wait after they secured the election. What I find interesting is that they felt the need to do it at all. Especially for the races that they were running.
It's commonly understood that elections after the Presidential election will generally go to the party that lost the Presidential race as a sort of backlash. And these particular elections were being held in majority Democrat areas. So you have a situation where the cultural expectation is that the loss of the Presidential election will be a rallying cry for Democrats in states where Democrats seem to have a strong hold.
What was the need for the reinforcement? It just seems odd.

These people, the Democrat's brains
🧠 🧠 do not fire from all cylinders to make a decision like the one in front of them.
They are damn lucky that the people who are affected in a negative way don't just go after them and take physical action against them. That's a real possibility if they don't open up the government promptly.011 Reply- 6 mo
Illegal immigrants in the US don't get medicaid accept emergency life threatening situations so your not funding illegals, it's US citizens that are loosing healthcare. It's all US citizens that will see their medical insurance premiums going up. Just like US citizens are facing artificially high inflation. The big beautiful bill will see average Americans paying more over the long term and poor Americans paying a lot more.
The only thing trump can do about the shutdown is the one thing he claims he's good at. Negotiate. Seen anything of him sitting down with the Democrats and negotiating? Trump is being increasingly authoritarian. I mean he keeps ignoring parts of the US constitution by claiming emergencies so he can bypass Congress - 6 mo
The ACA is not affordable nor did it allow us to keep our Dr. it was called the Great Lie. Trump wants to give you cash so you can choose for yourself rather than give money directly to insurance companies. Funny you choose the latter considering liberals like you hate corporations
- 6 mo
Oh I live in the UK, we have the NHS. As I said in a few years the only cash will have gone to the top. And insurance will cost more. Trump is giving you an illusion. The US is the wealthiest country on the planet. The only reason things are unaffordable is because you let the top 0.5% monetise you and asset strip your country
- 6 mo
Um at the start the minute the US became independent it bankrupted itself and had to start selling off land to gentry, you started as a country by asset stripping yourself for the gentry.
Not to say the UK was good then, the empire was an awful thing and America should have been left to the natives - 6 mo
@Cal4576
It's not entirely true. States like California (blue) and Minnesota (blue), which are known as sanctuary states, provide subsidized healthcare to everyone regardless of immigration status. These state's subsidized healthcare systems are also subsidized by federal money. In the state of California, it is estimated that 40% of their subsidized healthcare costs were going to illegals. Any federal money going to California would have funded that program, whether earmarked for it or not.
Anonymous(30-35)6 moWe all knew the Democrats would cave, because this is their fault. But I think what motivated them was wanting to be able to fly home during the holidays. Then in January or February this will all start over again.

6 moI think the Dems proved there point and I agree with them moving forward with this short term agreement. The entire country now knows they agreed to bypass the healthcare issue on a promise by the republicans to work with them on a solution to fix it so in some way all deserving American's will be able to afford healthcare. Now that the government is open and should the republicans renege on this promise when millions can no longer afford healthcare (which also includes so many republicans as well as dems or independent's) in the upcoming elections.
Remember this the average American citizen mostly cares about having a job, able to afford food, healthcare, home and some amenities and when that becomes beyond their means they want to know why.

6 moThey didn’t have a leg to stand on. They were hoping their BS message that this was a Republican shutdown would be accepted by citizens. But when the unions came out and said that the democrats need to vote on a clean CR (which is what the republicans offered all along) they had to fold.
And I think they got a few Dems to fold while chucky still says he was voting no that way the Dems as a party could save face.
Look at the facts… there were dems that said that this shutdown gave democrat “leverage”.
Also this was the same budget numbers they voted for several times in the past. Last thing is there was zero poison pills in that CR. It was CLEAN.02 Reply- 6 mo
It definitely was accepted, look what happened in the midterms
- 6 mo
That wasn’t the mid terms. They are coming in 2026. That was an off year election. And it wasn’t a blue wave, it was Dems winning in blue states. Hardly a major upset.
Anonymous(36-45)6 moEssentially, one is never going to win over public support by starving people and depriving working families of of pay during the holiday season. It does not matter if you blame Trump for that or the Democrats, it's not a good look, period. No "side" has solved anything. The hopeful re-opening is set to still end in January.

"then back to square one" 'fictional quotes
I don't follow specific political matters--it's depressing, it's back luck, and there's nothing I can do about them--but without knowing anything specific on the matter, I'd say that it's tragic that the Republicans got their way, but it's not a failing of the Democrats that they folded; they're more conscientious and compassionate about the negative effects of the government shutdown (especially on the needy) while Republicans are just full of conviction regarding their causes and dead callousness, which is why they're willing to keep the government in suspense for longer than the Democrats are.

6 moOnly some Democrats gave in, the majority of Democrats did not, which is sad. They've wasted 6 weeks of time where they could have been negotiating their wish list.
00 Reply 26.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I think that they realized a lot of people would be mad if the airports were half closed on Thanksgiving so they found 7 people to vote yes on the CR.

6 moYeah, as usual they were trying to sneak giving Illegal immigrants more money in there.. SMH.. Not that it matters the federal government has little control over our individual lives..

Damn! I’d like to have seen that pass!
6 moI think it was completely pointless to have the shutdown in the first place, because it achieved nothing.
