Have politics become the new religion of the West?

Politics seem to be the ruler by which we measure one another now. Most of those measurements are assumptions based on a group think (from both sides) that tells us how we should think about the other side. Largely, to me, it feels like Red (men) vs Blue (women). I remember politics in the 90s. Both sides disagreed with one another but they respected each other because they both wanted the best for the West. They also had shared principles to start with. To bring it home... Men and women disagreed on many things in life but found a way past those differences to a place where they could focus on what they loved about one another. Politics and relationships now both feel the same way in a lot of ways. I think the Internet has made this much worse because we can "other" someone without doing so in person. Think of two dogs barking at one another from either side of a fence gate. There's no real danger in that moment because the fence (the Internet) shields them from one another. But if you slide that gate open (in person arguments), the dogs will sometimes back off because the cost of the argument now is that someone will likely be bit or punched in the mouth. And maybe that's how it should be. Maybe some people need to understand the real world consequences to not controlling what comes out of their faces?
