Yes, it's true that certain map projections shrunk Africa, but some also showed it bigger and other parts of the world either got shrunk or blown up too. Don't they know it's impossible to depict the world in exact proportions on a flat surface, only globes can do that.

I can only assume it is an overreaction to the misrepresentation that the mercator map brings. Or alternatively not counting Russia and some others as Asian.

Basically we live on a sphere. When you stretch one out on a flat surface you need to compromise one of angles, size, distance or direction. Maps were originally made for travel. It made more sense to compromise the size with a footnote than to mess up the other ones. Because the map we use was Europe made the distortion makes Europe look. It is not some secret scheme.

There is a lot of discussion on if we should change map. We could for example have a map showing real size but if you tried to use it you'd end up in the wrong place.

Reality is that Africa is massive. Asia is even more massive. America is quite big but not even close to Asia or Africa and Europe is even smaller. Anyone who learned that maps show very incorrect sizes always ends up liking to point out how large Africa is and how th western countries are quite small in reality.

So honestly my best guess is wishful thinking paired with some indignation at their massive sized continent seeming like it is not very clearly the Second largest on earth.

Actually. Second thought. African countries might just be using a map where Africa is distortedly large in their classrooms. It is a simpler answer and would lead to this misconception.

So desperate to ”be” something that they have to delusion themselves into believing lies about stupid shit and brag about it to the rest of the world. Even if it had been the largest continent, so what? Would that make them cool or something? If anything it would make them even more useless and pathetic, that despite being the biggest they’ve accomplished basically nothing at all through the history of man kind. They have nothing to be proud of so they try to brag, and be proud of, dumb stuff like ”WeRe ThE bIgGeSt CoNtInEnT”, which is not even true, and think the rest of the world will be impressed.

Actually earlier, I stumbled on a video about this British woman who in Victorian times came up with the concept of computing, long before we even had the tech to invent a computer, and I was literally watching that thinking, "Why weren't sub-Saharan Africans that smart?"
