Do you think legalizing prostitution nationwide would actually make it safer, or just move the problems into another form of regulation?

No, it would not make it safer. Prostitution is always going to be dangerous. Not even counting all the possible STD's you could get. By being in this job, you risk getting robbed, raped and murdered. In fact, there are several serial killers in the past who targeted prostitutes because they thought prostitutites are "dirty." Also, some prostitutes are not even willing participants, they are being human trafficked. Same with people in porn or any kind of sex work. So by legalizing prostitution, you are in a round about way protecting pimps/traffickers from being arrested and taken into custody. I'm no expert in victimology, but I would think human trafficking victims would be too scared to come out and say they are being trafficked. Many victims also have something called Stockholm Sydrome, where they develop positive emotional bonds with their captor/abuser as a coping mechanism for survival and won't come out against their captor. That's why I can't stand books and movies such as Fifty Shades of Grey, 365 Days, etc. because they are fantasizing abuse and kidnapping and most of these women being depicted show signs of having Stockholm Syndrome. So no, legalizing prostitution would not become safe.

It would make some things safer, but it wouldn’t magically fix everything.

Legalization usually brings structure, health checks, worker protections, safer environments, and less reliance on dangerous underground networks.

That’s a real improvement.

But it also shifts the problems into another lane regulation, bureaucracy, and the risk of new gray areas popping up.

Some people would still avoid the legal system, and those spaces could stay unsafe.

So I think it helps, but only if it’s paired with good policy, real protection for workers, and a realistic understanding of how the industry actually works.

Otherwise it just becomes a new version of the same issues.

Sure it would make it safer. It would also take it out of the hands of pimps and organized crime. Would it come with regulatory oversight? Only if we want it to be safer for sex workers and customers. And if we want to tax the economic activity like anything else.

It could make it a lot safer for both prostitutes and their customers. I think it's a good idea, unless it's going to start involving arrests or charging people fees or similar things, which the government is unfortunately prone to do.

Legalizing prostitution is a net good. The freedom for victimized women to approach police without fear of being arrested themselves is super important. Not to mention taxation of prostitution could be huge for infrastructure costs. Legal forms of prostitution also mean legal protections against this incredibly high-risk job, these women can take abusive customers to court, more rapists would be prosecuted easily, etc.

Go back a few generations and fatal accidents at work were common place, even if you didn't die on the job then work related health issues meant few collected a pension. So why do we deny these rights to women? If a woman works in a brothel she should be given the same level of protection any employee who deals with the public gets at work.

I think it would make it safer in general. Studies have shown this is usually the case. There would be problems, I’m sure, but in general and overall, I think it would be better for those selling and those buying.
