Why do people cynically believe that the only way someone socialist like AOC can win the Presidency is if there is a recession?

I keep seeing this idea pop up on platforms like Reddit. But this sentiment is shortsighted. Because it implies that the only way she can win is if the economy is in dire straits.

I find this idea disturbing because it ignores the countless glaring issues that our economy faces. Income inequality, AI stealing jobs, housing shortages, higher costs of living, stagnant wages, student loan debt,….. Shall I go on?

And all of this is to say nothing about Covid or DOGE or One Big Beautiful Bill, which has collectively caused more harm. The last 2 that I mentioned have gutted the social safety net.

Our economy is absolutely abysmal even in the absence of a recession. Rather than cynically wait for the country to plunge into a recession before AOC can win, we need to understand that AOC already has a winning platform to fix an already-terrible economy.

We need to drop the cynical idea and recognize that the economy is already bad, and the sooner it is fix, the better. Don’t believe me? Mamdani was able to win even though NYC is not in a recession.

The demographics of NYC are not the demographics of the US. Mamdani was a Democrat in one of the most Democratic cities in the US. If Hitler ran as a Democrat in NYC, he'd win.

For AOC to win she'd need to carry a few of the swing states. To carry those she'd need to move significantly to the middle. Ironically this would destroy the reason you like her. Plus I don't think the national DNC is going to let AOC get anywhere near the white house. They don't like her.

Does she even want to run? I've never heard her express presidential aspirations.

The economy is doing better than it has in a few years. When the tax cuts take effect and intrrest rates are lower it should do even better. New York is a welfare city and Mamdani promised more free stuff. The wealthy are packing their bags along with big businesses. Mamdani went to the White House with he hat in his hand. He realizes that the tax base is leaving and Trump said he will cut funding. He knows he is in trouble. I imagine if he cannot deliver on his promises his head will be on a pike pole outside the entrance to the George Washington Bridge.
