Why parents think they know the best for us even though times change?

My parents (yes, they're old, but even now) still follow this outdated advice that you need to go to school to make a lot of money and land a good job. Maybe that was true a long time ago, but not anymore. In my experience, school nowadays is more of a scam and just an exercise in obedience and preparation to work in corpo's.

Women do this because it is easier to listen and go with the flow, but men 'make their hands dirty' and start doing business/trades hence why they are more successful than us women overall from my experience.

They also say I should save money, but the value of money keeps degrading at such a fast rate. That wasn’t much of an issue in the past.

Kind of a bummer to have parents who think that what they did is the absolute regardless of time and situation we are in.

My parents are absolutely so awesome but yes, they are oh, so outdated. They literally raised us like it was the 80's with limited internet and all of that. I threw tantrums at the time but in hindsight it was the best thing that ever could have happened to me.

BUT , yes, I went to college on my parents advice and moral support and it was an absolute total disaster for me for many reasons. I do not blame my parents in the least. They did the best they had with what they knew. But yes, it is our generation that has to realize the old ways no longer work. The older generations can no longer help us because never before in the history of humanity have these technological times occurred and at such a rapidly accelerating rate. It is up to us to come up with the new solutions that hopefully may help generations to come after us.

We have a long road, I'm sure with many unexpected twists and turns awaiting us but I also believe, with all my heart, we are up for this task and somehow, someway we will find a way. 😊

A college degree is a requirement for occupations such as engineering, architecture, law, medicine, accounting, and perhaps a few other professions that require a state license and a college degree to take the exam. Fifty years ago, people could become a professional engineer with eight years of experience if they passed the state engineering exam. Now you cannot take the exam and get a license without a college degree. No doubt that also applies to attorneys, architects, medical doctors, dentists, and probably accountants.

Some advice changes from generation to generation.

Some wisdom is eternal and always true.

Sex is for marriage, marry young and have a family. Gain as much knowledge as you can. Become an expert at an in demand skill or trade. Become useful to society. A soft answer turns away wrath.

About school. Only certain people need to go to school. STEM fields, medical, nursing, law, banking, accounting, education.

This push that everyone must go to school to get generic degrees or degrees that do not lead to careers is foolish.

Investing young is always wise. If you do not you may regret it at age 60.

It of course depends a lot on what you are going to school for. The safest thing to do is to get a degree at a trade school. The world needs people who know how to work with their hands more than anything. If you can make it through medical school or nursing school that is pretty solid, but it is very hard. Most liberal arts degrees are cons the only job you can get with them is being a professor of that subject and now there are far too many people with such degrees for the small number of professorships.

Thanks to the internet, school hasn't been helpful in a long time. I am about to get my bachelor's now and I feel like I learned nothing useful and sank 40k into it. Unfortunately, unless I get a degree, I won't be getting a job anywhere.
