Where did you get the idea that people who receive Social Security benefits in the USA are seen as low class, LOL? Social Security here is a non optional tax imposed on your earnings from the time you begin working to the time you reach retirement age. It's a government managed pension fund to guarantee people at least some small income in retirement in an extremist Capitalist economic system where the private sector has completely walked away from any sort of pensions to guarantee any sort of retirement income and privatized 401K plans are subject to constant market volatility.

We pay into Social Security our entire working lives. It's our money. Why would anyone be looked down on for taking their money they've invested for a lifetime of work? The government isn't giving us anything other than a platform to manage the investments and a system to pay out benefits. Capitalists are just pissed that can't get their hands on that huge pile of wealth to plunder it.

Social security is a Ponzi scheme and would be illegal with decades in prison if anyone other than our criminal government attempted it. There is no social security trust fund. All the money currently paid was spent before their retirement. The money retirees receive is taken by force from younger workers.

The so-called trust fund is a special type of non-negotiable Treasuries backed by nothing.

Like all Ponzi schemes, social security will fail.

The only people who are considered low class are those who ARE low class. If you pay in to social security, you get social security benefits after age 65 or 67.. Even if you've made lots of money.

Everyone is eligible to get those benefits as long as they've paid into the system through work or is a surviving spouse of someone who's paid into the system.

I receive Social Security retirement benefits because I paid for them. I know several people who have a new worth over a million dollars who receive Social Security retirement benefits. I have never heard anyone suggest that these recipients are low class people.

You're probably thinking of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) which is a food assistance program for the poor. It's been in the news lately because the government wants to reduce funding for it at a time that unprecedented numbers of people need the help. Conservatives are constantly trying to cast the people who need government assistance in a negative light.

SNAP is funded by our federal tax payments and is part of our farm assistance program.

Every worker and their employer pays separate Social Security taxes. Those taxes go into a trust fund to mostly pay retiree benefits, although people who are disabled or dependents of a deceased person are able to collect as well. Generally there isn't a stigma associated with collecting social security benefits.

You pay into it and get a dividend back as you retire. It's supposed to feel like an investment by paying out every pay check but ultimately is a larger security net.

Once we started SSI elder poverty dropped by over 90%. Old farts aren't begging for money at every corner.

Let's pretend together and become the most cruel egotistical people alive today. Just for a moment. I'd pay a billion dollars never to smell a homeless person. pay it 10x over not to see them again.

It depends on the reason for getting social security benefits. For example, Social security or SSI is for Retirement. SSDI is for disability.. Welfare though are for those that either won't work, or work but can't make enough to get by. Unemployment is not part of social security, its a different thing all together.

Its those that refuse to work that those of use who pay into the social security system can't stand. Not those who are disabled, and not those who are retired. Just those that refuse to contribute. Same with those that use food stamps and refuse to work, or those that are getting said benefits illegally.

Bottom line, there is way more than just one kind of social security benefit.

Hopefully that clears up a bit of confusion.

Receiving social security benefits is not looked down on at all. There are many who believe the system is destined to crash and burn, as the entire model relies on one failing pillar.

Receiving social benefits, though, IS often looked down on. Not because we believe those benefits shouldn't be there for those who need them, but because the system is constantly abused. That abuse is basically a slap in the face to everyone who pays taxes and has to give up their own hard-earned money to fund another person's life when that person is perfectly capable of supporting themselves.

Social Security is primarily a retirement benefit. In fact, about 94% of all recipients are retired. Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) is paid out to only 5.4% of the population.

Some folks in the USA look down on ANYONE who receives "free money" from the government, but people who are legally and truly disabled due to some event or circumstance, and have worked and contributed to the system, don't deserve any of that. ALL of those people wish they were able to work again and not have the disabilities they do.

They are low class because they never got a retirement plan so they get to become a parasite class to people who could be using that money towards their own retirement plan.

Not to mention social security is about to collapse within a decade anyway. With life expectancy skyrocketing yet the age to recieve it is still 65 (which was way above life expectancy at the time social security came to be), there will be more parasites sucking the ponzi scheme dry and there will be no more left for the younger generations.

I don’t hear people talking about a “low class” stigma around social security. People who receive Social Security benefits are either retired, widowed, orphaned, or disabled. Everyone understands those categories, and I don’t think anyone is saying that any of those conditions are less than “classy.” Everyone who is retired collects social security; even those with good pensions or lots of investments. Everyone.

That's BS. I know some people who collect Social Security in their retirement, money that they and their employers paid into for decades. It's not lower class.

Perhaps you're confusing Social Security with SNAP (food stamps), especially for people who choose not to work?

Collecting Social Security does not mean you are low class. Everyone that had a job in the private sector pays into the system during their entire working life and they are entitled to benefits when they retire or if they become disabled.
It is the people who never paid a dime into the system but still get to game the system are low class but I am sure that they could care less what we think.

Actually, everyone who pays into Social Security winds up in the end getting Social Security if they live long enough. You pretty much have to live past a certain age. I think it's something like 62 or 65 in order to collect benefits. If you don't live past that age, then the government just winds up with them, I guess.

it's not very common for people who get benefits to work. they get benefits because they can't work. but if they can work they usual are working and need some assistance. so, those people are paying for their own social security in a way.

I totally disagree about those receiving Social Security benefits being low class. Any person receiving the benefits paid for it through their working days. Probably over 75% of those age 65 or older received SS benefits.
