Why aren't more people afraid of driving?

there are just a lot of things in general that would make sense to be scared of, yet we're not

like a lot of people's brains ignore it to stay sane and function. i was in a bad car accident in 2024 and it took a bit to get over being nervous, but my brain eventually adjusted/processed it

What's your source for that figure? The CDC does not show automobile accidents in the top 10 causes of death. People aren't afraid of driving because the chance of dying on a given trip is vanishingly small. Mile for mile it's more dangerous than flying or train travel, but still not at the top of anyone's list.

The 1.02% for traffic accidents is pretty close. NHTSA traffic deaths and total deaths are pretty easy to find.

@WindAtMyBack You are correct -- there are about 3.1 million deaths per year in the US, and 33,000 traffic deaths, so about 1% of the deaths are from traffic accidents.

Driving does scare me. It's mostly the other people who scare me, but I also know that a split second of my own inattention can be the end of me.

Sometimes in life, you have to take your chances. Where I live, you need a car to get around. You just have to be very careful. Since I’m not made of money, taking Uber everywhere is out of the question.

every year 941,000 people die in the US of heart disease.
That is 1 out of every 3 deaths.
So that make driving seem pretty safe. Only 39,325 died in 2024 in the US in traffic accidents.

If people would follow the rules and not speed and not drink while under the influence that chance would probably be lower.

Many people do, but they drive because they actually think they have to (usually because of their job).
