After watching films made at Mammoth Ski resort, and at other ski resorts, many skiers are wearing helmets, much like my cycling helmet. While skiing, I never put myself in a position to ski into a tree or ANYTHING for that matter.

Sonny Bono was killed (in 1998) instantly at lake Tahoe, after skiing at 30 mph into a tree, and died of massive head trauma. After that time, many people were seen wearing helmets.

My cousins husband raised a RUNNING rotary lawn mower and put his hand under it to try to remove some stuck grass debris? MOWERS NOW HAVE WRITTEN WARNINGS ABOUT NOT PUTTING YOUR HANDS UNDER THE MOWER WHILE IT IS RUNNING!

While driving in Laguna Beach on a single lane drive in a neighborhood, I stopped dead in the street, rather than pass a man working on his vehicle, WHO DID NOT KNOW I WAS THERE, for fear he may step in front of me because the car is silent. You might have a brain but there's millions out there who are complete idiots and anyone of them could kill you by doing something dumb. These regs are as much about stopping them hurting others as themselves.

Work H&S was originally brought in because someone tried to iron clothes whilst wearing them then successfully sued their boss for not warning of the dangers.

Then there's the huge cost of rescuing people, the lost days at work, the drain on hospitals.

If you look at a fishing lure box they'll often have a warning on them not to eat the contents. It's a piece of plastic with hooks dangling from it yet there needs to be a warning not to eat. Do you really thing your safe in a world where people need to be told this?

You can be injured skiing without hitting a tree. You could be hit by another skier so that your head hit hard-packed snow and you got a concussion. I was skiing downhill rather fast, and hit an invisible dip in the snow. I fell backward and hit my head on the snow. I was very glad I was wearing a helmet.

by the way, a helmet won't protect you from injury if you hit a tree. Nor will it save you if you fall into a tree well or a creek or go off piste and get caught in an avalanche.
