Especially the people back home.


They see me as the one who left to chase great opportunities and is swimming in money and success


They have no idea how cold and lonely the expat life can be


Success is not picked off the ground.
You need to climb a seemingly endless mountain all by yourself

Nope. People tend to think my life is exotic and scary. They have all sorts of delusions and misconceptions about my background. It gets really tedious trying to explain reality to them.

Sadly, people do think this all the time about other people, without getting to know what is going on in their lives. A classic poem comes to mind:

Nope. Yet ironically, nobody really said that to me till after I grew past the need for that kind of validation. Figures 😂

You're better off assuming no one will ever see how hard you work and even if they do, often times they pretend not to be impressed because your success invalidates the hopelessness they've retreated to.

I don't think they believe that my life is easy. It's become a lot harder since I my boyfriend died 2 years ago. He was my go to person. He could fix anything. And he knew what to do in any given situation.
One thing that I really struggle with is how to operate my cellphone. He was my teacher.
I hate that the cupboards in my kitchen go all the way to the ceiling and I have to lift a step ladder just to get something I need.

I don’t think it is a common thing or automatically assumed. I did get the feeling certain people that I grew up around thought that, given my parents’ resources.

I never really thought about it. I do not think anyone thinks my life is easy. I have been working hard since I got out of high school.
