China's birthrate (5.63 per 1000 people) is the lowest it's been since 1949, when the Chinese first start recording it. China's population has fallen for the 4th consecutive year, down 3 million from 2024 to 14.04 billion. China, once the most populous country, was surpassed by India in 2023. China has done several things to try to increase its birth rate. It repealed its decades-long one child policy a decade ago, and offers child-care subsidies. It has even increased the tax on condoms, in an attempt to get people to have more children. What do you think of that? Is a tax on condoms a good way to increase the birth rate?

Probably not, but the whole issue is retarded anyway. The fervor over a declining population is 100% capitalist pigs worrying about who’s going to buy their useless garbage. There is no shortage of resources. The uber wealthy have more than enough for everyone but have been allowed to hoard everything of value. Machines and computers are maybe one human generation away from replacing 90% of human workers and two generations from replacing everyone. However, nobody wants to have the obvious conversation about universal basic income. So obviously spending IS going to drop to almost nothing. Which is exactly why they’re conditioning us to the bare necessities costing us everything we earn.
It’s literally the ONLY way the infinite profit growth business models can persist. Even if every idiot with voter ID didn’t believe regulating greed is “socialism” or “communism”, the corporations own 100% of lawmakers. So what do we do now?
I’m stocking up on popcorn and readying for the world to burn.

Anything that you do to make birth control less available potentially leads to a higher birth rate. But China’s decreased birth rate has many causes and a tax on condoms will have virtually no effect on the birth rate or the decreased marriage rate.

It's not like the world's short of Chinese people is it? Apart from future cannon fodder why do they need more? Increases in technology and AI means you need less people.

I suspect the birth rates dropped for same reason it has in the west. We now expect kids to survive to adulthood so don't need spares, we don't need extra hands to work the fields, and people aren't getting pregnant the day they leave school, most go through years of uni or training first.

If you want the population to rise then pay men more so their wives don't have to work and can stay home churning out kids

We do not want to increase the birth rate, by making it harder for poor people to get birth control. That will just lead to higher numbers of people in the welfare system and not enough people to support them.

If you want to make the birthrate go up you should make childcare easier, not make birth control harder.

Same with tax on sugar, tea, and alcohol. People will spend the money regardless, it means they pay more. Think about it from the perspective of the rise of grocery store prices, people are spending however taking money out of their retirement plans or some other area or taking on a second job (to those really hurting during this period).

the best way to increase the birthrate is to have reasonable cost of living and a nice environment to raise the child in.

as for the expensive condoms, no. it maybe actually harmful to the females because if they don't actually want kids, they will go to desperate measures to get rid of the fetus.

As a geopolitical analyst, specifically in the Indo Pacific region, it's a stupid idea. The Chinese are best savers in the world - a simple tax of a mere 13% isn't going to change that. What's driving not just China's, but in many developing or developed countries around the world low birth rates is usually tied to standard of living which is getting more and more expensive.

rich people (outside of Elon Musk) aren't exactly popping out children in the dozens despite having more than enough resources to do so

meanwhile poor Islamists and religious Africans are popping out children in the millions and are set to be the largest demographic in the world by the end of the century
