He is considering a moratorium on any immigration of where those people who cannot speak conversational English when they get off the plane will be turned around and sent home. What do you think?

Any idiot can get to grips with written language or learn to say various phrases but conversation is extremely difficult to grasp because it doesn't follow the same structure and words aren't always pronounced class room style.

In balance I agree people moving to a different country should have a decent standard of conversation but it's where you draw the line. Very few second language speakers ever get to native standard.

Surely this should be addressed before they get on the plane anyway.

I agree with that, unless their life is in jeopardy or some other manner of persecution. Of course, everyone will just claim they need asylum and try to abuse the system anyway.

Who hires somebody who doesn't' even speak English in a nation where almost everyone speaks English as a 1st language? You can't even do your damned job without a translator if you don't speak English.

Australia requires immigrants to be certified at IELTS 8. I think this is somewhat unreasonable as native English speaker won't pass that level without preparation in the written section.

Immigrants should be able to certify before they get onto a plane rather then be tested after they arrive.

It will provide a good incentive for the immigrants to learn English. I worked in situations with immigrant parents that need to bring in an interpreter. Their interpreter is there 5 to 7 year old child.

My grandparents could not speak English when they got here. they learned English and became citizens. They bought homes and raised families.

Mine came from Ireland. Of couple of generations earlier. They mostly spoke Gaelic. But they managed. But that was then and this is now.
