That's the next shoe to drop. Cannot force "regime change" in Iran. The people against the govt are larger, but unarmed, historically massacred. They may fight but not well. So that leaves ground troops assuming Iran military can be weakened enough.

Or Trump calls it a victory and leaves them weakened... probably smarter move.

Either way, would you support a resolution requiring him to get congress approval. Granted, it's already in the constitution, it's a formality.

congressional approval isn't a formality. it's a rule. trump has the right to deploy the army for a period of time (60-days) but continued deployment requires an official declaration of war by congress or congress simply not declaring war but being ok with the president's action.

it's not a formality because the military and funding for deployment can be pulled by congress at any point after 60-days. funding for the military has of course been allocated but funding for deployment can be contingent on a declaration of war which is a power held by congress

We do not have a monarchy/dictatorship here. We are supposed to work together to get things done. Congress SHOULD have a vote or a word in the decisions. By the same token, Congress should be representing the people, but seem to be in it for themselves and the money. How many in Congress do not retire as millionaires? Do we, the people, get great lifetime health care and a fat pension like they do - for life? They cut spending on the people and vote themselves in pay raises. They actually work how many days a year? The whole system is a joke.

It’s hypocrisy. The US hasn’t ratified an official war declaration since WW2. None of these hypocrites gave a sh*t about Obama ordering drone strikes that were reportedly targeting civilians, including women and children. They’re tribalist sh*theads. When Obama and Biden made terrible military decisions, they stood and cheered. Even when Drumpf does exactly the right thing, it’s a “war crime” and suddenly they need new resolutions to bolster their power to obstruct and override him. Then when the sh*t hits the fan, they will still blame Drumpf for everything.

What would be the point? The War Powers Act already allows the President to commit armed forces to military action so long as Congress is notified within 48 hours and allows the president to maintain engagement with the enemy for 60 days with an allowance for an addition 30 days for withdrawal without congressional approval. Trump just needs approval for ground forces after 90 days and congress won't even have any legislation passed before then. So they might as just wait for the clock to run out. Either the conflict will be resolved, or the President will need Congressional approval.

Congress has the authority to declare war, The President of The United States of America has the authority to move troops.

The only issue I find is that The Founders didn’t anticipate The President being heavily influenced by lobbyist groups (for billion to trillion dollar asset worth corporations), foreign nations (Israel), and commanding the largest military force on the planet (currently America is #1 in Military).

I have to say this, if a missile strike is troops being moved then what is stopping potential POTUS from striking a country he wants to start a conflict with forcing Congress’ hand to declare war for that POTUS to engage in?
I solely believe Congress should have the say and there needs to be greater checks and balances to The President of The United States. It makes sense that way.

O dont think there was ever any intention to put ground troops in Iran but its a foolish move by Congress ruling out it, politicians do this kind of shit too often, they tell our enemies what we are going to do, when and for how long. The US military has a huge number of Special operations forces. 7000 army Green berets alone and their role is to train behind enemy lines rebels and paramilitaries to engage in gurelia warfare. 1 green berets might be worth a thousand men in terms of recruiting and training gurelias to overthrow a regime.

This is true but there's something like 70,000 in SOCOM, now granted that might be all the military personnel in support roles included but even so thats a 3rd of say the British army. You heard the reports of when the US military went in after Maduro, the Venezuelans said there were very few us boots on the ground but what was there was absolutely picking them apart, that would be the new M7 with smart scopes and 6.8mm rounds, Iron sights on an AK variant or FAL ain't going to cut it.
