When I was a young adult, I felt hopeful that my life would get better, because I was away from the bullies that was making my life a living hell. I thought it might be a time of healing for me. But instead my relationships just went downhill. That is my world, and other people's world. I think the world in general, has gradually gotten worse. 9/11 There were people flying airplanes into the trade towers. That got a war started that wasn't going on until that time. I guess you could argue that there have always been wars going on...

They were localised, nothing major in Europe from WWII to Ukraine. The worst was Kosovo in the end of the 90's.

I was trying to reassure @Apulu_backagain that peace, at least in regions and for generations, is possible. It's something to strive for. A lot of people on here grew up with the Afghan war since they can remember or even before they were born. The Cold War was scary, but ironically peaceful, any wars were being fought far away from Europe and the US.

I think overall it's better now than when I became an adult. The standard of living is far better with people living with far more luxuries. The air, land and water is cleaner. There are less wars and international tension. Social attitudes are far more relaxed. It's safer now. Science, medicine and technology is far more advanced. Overall health is better with higher life expectancy.

There are some negatives as well, but I think overall it's better now.

I agree with most of the things but I have to disagree with your opinion on war and international tension, there is a real possibility of World War 3 now.

There is always a possibility of a world war. But it's extremely unlikely. Anything going on now is nothing compared to the cold war.

Rent was so cheap back then. Around $500. That's less than 3x what we pay now. Luckily I have a roommate.

It was a brutal place. There were no good jobs around and you had to know somebody to get one. I had o college degree and no real marketable skills. I had a crappy sales job where I worked a lot , took lots of abuse and hated it. If A truck hopped the curb I might have not been too quick to move out of the way.

I got a college degree by going at night part time. It took forever but I finally graduated. I went to graduate school right after that and got a Computer Science degree. I have had a successful career in IT and now teach Computer Science at a local college.

I have to admit my grandma gave me her old car but only after I had saved up enough from working at my school and at a Wendy's to be shopping around.

I did everything I could to hide the fact I even was working from my parents because they kept trying to make me pay for random shit. 😂 like after I get my car guys!

No PTSD, it was just something that could happen, not something that would. I never personally experienced an IRA bombing or lived where one was likely, although a co-worker of my sister was hit by flying glass from one. I had a good childhood.

According to this fictional Bollywood movie 'My name is Khan', which by the way is really good (it is about this autistic Muslim guy whose step son was by murdered by school bullies after 9/11 so he goes out and does everything to meet the president and in his journey he contributes a lot to Georgia Flood and after many years Obama recognizes him and allows him to finally say the world 'My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist'), things were so bad that people started removing their Arab or Muslim or South Asian employees and they would openly scream controversial hate phrases and assault hijabis and in reaction to that, the muslims would hate the rest americans too. Was it that bad?
