To me sophistication is having inherently strong values and a steady moral compass

I think you are talking about SOCIAL sophistication. There are other kinds of sophistication though.

Sophistication means having deep knowledge of, understanding of, and experience in something. The "something" can vary a lot.

Social sophistication would mean someone with a deep knowledge and understanding of formal social rules and expectations, including dress, behavior, and norms. They are going to understand and be familiar with things like formal dinners, with specific multiple courses, which silverware to use when, to anticipate speeches and other events, and how different people are expected to behave (who does introductions, for example).

I understand social sophistication in principle but I personally have zero interest in it myself so I have very limited experience with it in practice, and no desire to change that.

To me, true sophistication isn’t about appearance, status, or showing off knowledge.

It’s more about quiet confidence, emotional intelligence, and treating others with respect regardless of who they are.

But in practice I think it usually means you pleasently surprise or agree with someone else

Depends on context, I can think of sophistication as something desirable and undesirable, I can think of someone with pleasant and fluid manners, like I can think of someone behaving in a conditioned, rigid way.

I don't consider myself to be extremely sophisticated, but I've learned early on that certain formal situations demand acting this way. It's more a question of knowing how to behave with other people and showing them the respect they deserve.
