To be of "above-average intelligence" means having a higher-than-normal capacity for learning, reasoning, and problem-solving. While the most common metric for this is an IQ test score, it is more comprehensively understood through a set of cognitive skills and personal characteristics.
IQ scores and classifications
Intelligence Quotient (IQ) tests are standardized to have a mean score of 100. Scores are placed on a "bell curve," where the majority of people fall into the average range.
Average intelligence: An IQ score between 85 and 115.
Above-average intelligence: This category typically begins above 115 and is sometimes called "bright" or "high average".
Gifted intelligence: An IQ score of 130 or higher is considered gifted and puts a person in the top 2% of the population.
Cognitive and behavioral characteristics
Signs of above-average intelligence extend beyond test scores and include certain mental and behavioral traits.
Cognitive abilities
Rapid learning: Quickly grasping new and complex concepts without extensive instruction.
Advanced problem-solving: The ability to find innovative solutions and break down complex problems efficiently.
High curiosity: An intense desire for mental stimulation and a wide range of interests.
Acute self-awareness: The capacity to understand one's own thought process, which allows for better self-evaluation and performance.
Pattern recognition: The skill to spot and leverage patterns in data or situations that others might miss.
Personality traits
Open-mindedness: An acceptance of new ideas, perspectives, and experiences.
Insightful humor: A witty or mature sense of humor that reflects strong verbal intelligence.
Enjoyment of solitude: The need for quiet time for reflection and mental stimulation.
Strong verbal ability: A large vocabulary and skill in reasoning.
Emotional intelligence (EQ): While not part of a traditional IQ score, a higher capacity for empathy and social awareness is often present.
Limitations of IQ tests
While IQ scores offer a useful framework, they do not provide a complete picture of a person's abilities.
IQ tests measure only certain types of intelligence and do not account for creativity, practical skills, or emotional intelligence.
A high IQ alone does not guarantee success and can sometimes be accompanied by challenges, such as anxiety or social difficulties.
Other factors, including motivation, environment, and opportunities, are also critical for achievement.
Painfully well above average intelligence. I’ve scored into genius range on two Stanford-Binet IQ tests, administered by two different people at different times in my life. I have fallen just shy of genius range on more than double that number of tests, not all of which were necessarily standardized. Therefore I don’t know that i have ever taken a Wechsler test or facsimile.
I am usually the smartest person in a given room. Mostly because i take my intelligence for granted and have rarely challenged myself. Eagles may be more admirable, but turkeys are more fun. Ell oh ell! Sometimes i regret not going to college. Other times i realize that it might have been ultimately fruitless. I’m a polymath; a naturally curious person and a gifted learner. I might have wasted decades and hundreds of thousands of dollars learning about everything without ever becoming excellent at anything. I am an excellent electrician now and i can learn everything else for free!
The most valuable lessons i ever learned were understanding what i don’t know and accepting what i can’t know. I think the book “Being Wrong” by Kathryn Schultz should be required reading at every major tier of education. I highly recommend it to every reader i know, especially “know it all” types and those particularly interested in better understanding how we consume, store and recall information, and the wide variety of ways we f*ck that up. Yet we still move through life under the assumption that we are right and behave as though making mistakes will mean the end of life as we know it. Ell oh ell! I have a theory on that last part, but that’s a different conversation.
I really don't want to know. I'd hate to sit a test and learn I'm actually stupid. But being confirmed as a genius could be just as bad as it may lead to regret of unfulfilled potential.
I'm not that convinced true intelligence can be measured because the solution to all problems can be taught. Are those who solve mensa riddles really smart or just familiar with the maths?
They say experience teaches fools. But in my experience it doesn't. An intelligent person learns from observing the experience of others and doesn't need experience to understand things. So based on my observations of GAG I reckon I've more than my fair share of marbles.
@purplepoppy let's face it lady - unless you parrot or copy and paste a lot - you've been here years. You always have a lot to say 💯
@purplepoppy One thing I've never doubted is your intelligence.
@purplepoppy The GaG community seconds @AngryCarl2 's comment.
The good news is you’re definitely not suffering the Dunning-Kruger effect. Ell oh ell!
You should definitely take at least one standardized IQ test. It will answer some of your questions about riddles, maths, and experience versus book learning.
It's not always a math or logic thing. Topological challenges don't math. It's all about the ability to manipulate 3 dimensional shapes in your mind and see an orientation that will solve the challenge.
* don't require math.
My sister, (Yes, the evil, middle one again) said I have a head full of marshmallow fluff but when I asked her which flavor she couldn't answer, so, nyah, nyah to her, who's the dummy now!
I didn’t realize that they’re making fluff in a variety of flavors now. I’ve only ever had original marshmallow. This is the worst possible time to have given up refined sugar!
Ty for the MHO 😊
Intelligence is a multifaceted quality that includes emotional, analytical, and creative dimensions. I consider myself knowledgeable due to my experiences and continuous learning in education and career development. However, intelligence is more than just knowledge; it’s about adaptability and understanding, which I strive to improve constantly.

I used to measure to a fairly high intelligence. But chemo and aging have taken their toll. I can no longer remember many things I learned in school and through experience. It is hard for me to participate in conversation because I keep halting when I cannot think of the word that expresses what I wish to say. I do pretty well with written conversations because I can research what I intend to express.
I’ve been losing words myself lately. It’s a loathsome feeling.
MENSA said I was "Highly Intelligent" and offered me membership, but that was 38 years ago. These days maybe above average based on my ability to understand men have XY Chromosomes and women have XX, but that's not the "science" so many over-vocal clowns want me to follow...
Well people who are clue less are also clue less about their "situation" so i think i am average but "might be less, like most people" but... i tested 133/142 so on the scale of 284 like youghoon's test i rank just behind him, at 266/284, between him and ainan at 250.
No offense but the highest iq lady ranks 5th, with 4 males higher , not counting my unofficial ratio that would fill the top 5 with male.
My IQ is above average tested by mensa. You book a time, show your ID. Its a real test not the fake ones online. Anyone who got their IQ test online or base it on their grades/field have no idea what their IQ is.
subjetively feel "average" or maybe even slightly below average. but objectively i'm considered "gifted" according to the psychologist that tested me back when i was a kid and my teachers thought i may have "special needs". turns out that special need was being challenged cause the slow school system bored me out so i zoned out.
Oh at any given moment I can span the full range from idiot to genius, LOL. But at least I'm smart enough to understand that I don't know it all and secure enough to listen to good input from another person.
Your bias about “good input” is holding you back. 🤣🤣🤣
I used to be bright/above average. However I haven't been tested in 20 years and some of my meds could be causing deterioration. The silver lining in that cloud is that stupid people have no idea how dumb they really are.
I would like to know who has the intelligence of a rock
We won’t know until someone takes the time to learn the rock’s language. They may be smart, but they’re also stubborn. So i don’t think the rocks will bother to learn our language (s).

everyone here is gonna overestimate their intelligence until I expose them
That's Dr. Maddow to you, sunshine.
@AngryCarl2 are you a huge fan of Dr Rachel Maddow?
Not exactly. I've seen her content before but I don't seek it out. If anything, I prefer Lawrence O'Donnell.
@AngryCarl2 maybe you prefer Joy Reid too
I'd say above average for sure looking at the world today!
I have taken a few IQ tests. Avg of 128. It's considered above avg. That said IQ tests are one way to measure intelligence. The other day I forgot where my keys were for a half an hour before realizing they were in my pocket lol.
Your update is something we all need to remind ourselves of. Even if you're smart you don't know everything. Personally, if I'm debating someone, and I lose, or realize, hmmm they're making a valid point, I'm really happy to own up to it. Sometimes people get upset when they're proven wrong, but I think that's how we become smarter. It's ok to be wrong and it's even better to give credit where it's due and thank the person for helping educate you.
Most recently I had a conversation around economics with a more conservative friend and I found myself agreeing with him more than I could have thought. The great part is I'm more progressive and he's conservative. For fun we're now trying to pretend like if it depends on us, what could we do that would be more collaborative and beneficial. So although we haven't figured it out (if it were only that easy right) we're talking. That's what we need to do with each other more often. Things get done that way.
I'm smart as a rock. If you're really intelligent you learn that showing and bragging with your intelligence isn't a smart move. lol
I never really tested at, but some say it's above average.
I'm not sure, maybe they are right.
To be honest everything changes so fast I dont really know anything but I can adapt and learn everyday and I can figure things out
Above Average 😁
And yet most of my knowledge is just germs and risk related.
Not stuff applicable lol that I can apply to
@AviatorTom above average but can't judge myself so best is i'll let others judge me and tell.
By test, about 150. I get perfect scores on standardized tests.
Apparently not intelligent enough to get off of GAG!
Tested at 145 IQ years ago. Not sure about lately. ;- )
Such a shame the maximum score, due to iq meaning quotient, is 142 unless you took a test on the 240 scale... with 100 average and 145 from 240. 145/240.
@strateguy632 It was 145/160, a hair under the 3SD/SB test- - - so about 99.75%/100.00% of the total pop. My older daughter and I were both in Mensa, but frankly, we got bored with the haughtiness of the whole IQ thing and applied our intelligence to things that mattered to us. She got her Master's of Engineering Degree (6 year degree) in five, homeschools and is a published author in homeschooling.
One sixty or so IQ. I'm as brainy as I am handsome.
IQ score 160 and excellent at noticing things. Like scary good.
@robocop666 my reply to massage is relevant to your claim.
@strateguy632 I got no message send it again
It is here on this page a reply to user "massage". (Not message).
I have a doctoral degree after 14 years of post-graduation education. You decide.
That says nothing. You could be anywhere from 100-180 in IQ. Although the average doctor has an IQ of 120 which is above average and some lower some higher. But congrats on your doctor agree thats great
It turns out that academic success and IQ are extremely highly correlated such that IQ is the single best predictor of academic success. What does that tell you?
Its not sadly. You can't test someone iq ny asking what their field is. Also intelligence is not only iq its eq ans sq too which is at least equally as important mamy doctors would argue more. So no doctor will test your IQ by asking what you do for a living.
I never said you have a low iq but your field says nothing.
And just because its commen for doctors to have high IQ it doesn't say anything about your IQ
Education doesn’t equate to intelligence, especially in this modern age of deplorable education standards.
You cannot attain certain educational goals without having a high and measurable IQ. EQ is definitely a thing but in most fields it doesn't have much to do with academic achievement. Iq does. This is why IQ tests are designed the way they are.
Ask any doctor if they test someones IQ by asking what their field is. Also the average doctor has an iq of 120. That means plenty have below that too just like above.
@bunnyboo24 you cannot test it that way, but you can infer it to a greater or lesser degree.
But its meaningless. There are doctors who have 100 in IQ and doctors who have 150 in IQ.. completely different results but same field
The reason I am average is because I fall between 130-140 on a good day at my age... true intelligence is not based on knowledge but enhanced through unrehearsed problem solving adaptability.
Smart enough. ;)
Highly intelligent
I passed the test to get into MENSA
I can be your “Pet Rock”
Highly am I.
About average.
