Who said he "wanted out of NATO"? If he did, why would he have wanted NATO countries to spend more on defense (starting with what they promised to back in 2015 and most didn't even meet that).

Truth is, the European members of NATO are plenty able to defend themselves and should with the US providing a backstop and intelligence information if needed.

One other thing- a US withdrawal from NATO would require Congressional legislation signed by the President or 2/3 approval of the Senate.

Trump did not really want out of NATO. He wanted the NATO countries to pay their agreed upon 3% of their GDP towards it which they were not doing. They were all letting the US pick up the tab for everything and Trump was sick of seeing the US get ripped off. He was right of course and now they are actually paying 5% of their GDP. As a result NATO is a stronger organization. Trump also got out from under financing the war in Ukraine and now NATO is paying for it and purchasing the weapons from the US.

I thought he said he would leave nato if they didn't start coming good on their end of the bargain and hold up there end of the responsibilty in maintaining their military and fighting forces and not just hide behind the shield that is the American military complex. Could be wrong though lots has happened since then and I tend to adapt with the times and not dwell to much on the past.

Trump has never wanted out of NATO. He wants NATO members to pay their fair share, and not rely on the United States. Almost 16% of NATO's annual budget is paid by the US.

Typical of his usual negotiations, he has threatened to pull US out of NATO, to get other countries to contribute more.
