Trump is a harsh critic of NATO, and everyone seems to think that Trump no longer cares about Europe, that he is only interested in the American continent and the rivalry with China.
Very well, but under these circumstances, why has he still not left NATO?
People forget that if China or Russia attack the USA then all members have to aid the usa just as much as we would if France was attacked. China has a much larger naval fleet than America and history shows when it comes down to naval combat size matters.
American bases in Europe are mostly for the defence of America. Being allowed bases here gives America a huge advantage over its old enemy.
Nato countries are contracted to buy X amount of weapons from the US. Its a huge money spinner for them.
But perhaps the military simply told him leaving would be dumb and weaken America.
China does not have what is called a true “blue water navy” although its coming along. So they cannot project power very well beyond their region. The US certainly can. Also, the US has about 4 million tons of warships and China has 2 million tons. A lot more weapons, jets, sensors and troops can be carried in those ships so the number of ships can be deceiving.
We d0n’t want to pay for Europes’s defense anymore. Europe allowed itself to become very weak and they don't make for a strong Allie. Now we also see pills that show that their citizens won’t even fight if they are invaded. Useless. We can make peace with Russia if needed even China. Europe either rearms and acts like a good alliance partner or we conserve our money and focus our defense in the US. But now we also see Europe will riddle itself with more problems as Muslims gain numbers. We think it may be time to cut ties. Our grandparents had a strong tie to Europe but the new generations don’t.
Then we will call you Empress of Wales. We honor you we respect you and we admire you. You’re very beautiful, strong and powerful with great knowledge and wisdom. You deserve the title.
@Iron_Man The problem is that some here, those in power, what that. It isn’t a terrible idea given what Europe’s military became around 2017 when Trump had his famous stare down at Nato with Merkel. That started an underground movement here to become isolationist again. Now Europe is waking up to more war in Europe, ironically caused by Germany for a 3rd time. And now China is finally being seen by leaders in Europe, like Germany, for the threat they are.
The best defense is a united world including the US, Europe, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Philippines as the primary alliance. That was floated to Europe but they said no. So the second best defense for the US is isolationism. Which is where Trump is taking us if Europe doesn’t re-arm and become a staunch allie. Funny enough, the UK is considered our strongest Allie but what can be done when the Empress herself says out. My Irish lineage back to the Ó Catháin clan seems weak in comparison.
As a geopolitical analyst, there's A LOT that's often left out by US media (I stay away from 95% of US media), but here's some points:
1. NATO countries haven't kept their share of the bargain in terms of defense spending (keep in mind this issues was brought up by Obama and has lingered on since today)
2. When the Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea, only the UK and the Americans actually came to defend the area (Trump pulled out of the fight then).
3. As a pain as the Europeans can be (exception of the English), leaving NATO would be disastrous because it could trigger Putin to go full scale war - NATO countries are not prepared for a full scale war - courtesy of that German blockhead Merkel.
4. The reality is that even America cannot be everywhere at once. Europe has to take an assertive role of it's OWN backyard and home. Despite all the criticisms the US gets all the time, at the end of the day, without US protection, the Europeans are sitting ducks - this is what happens when there's a over dependence on another party and you have far left leaning policy of always wanting to hold hands and sing Kublai my lord... totalitarian regimes only respect power and strength - that's it.
Trump rule number one don't pay any attention to what he says. It's often nonsense and self contradictory. Watch what he does. His policies towards NATO actually have some value. The world relying on the US to back up what NATO is doing when they spend under what the treaty says is fair. Is getting out of NATO is dumb for the US and US interest. Since getting out of NATO will not benefit him financially personally not will add any case to his ego. Seems unlikely he will do anything real to get out of NATO. Unless it personally benefits him.
@Stevepro68 Yah, basically this. Or, as I stated, Trump always starts out with a hard-line position, but then negotiates it away. Like the proverbial dog whose bark is much more terrifying than his actual bite.
Leaving NATO would be a huge control loss for US geopolitics. NATO is they key to divide EU. However it didn't went the way US wanted. EU started to rearm but with their own arms. This makes EU not only independent but an additional competitor on weapon market. Of course US isn't happy that Russia turns out to be a paper tiger but with GDP of Italy their conventional capabilities are limited. This make Russia as the biggest fear monger in the east (from perspective of EU) useless for US. US can leave NATO but it doesn't change anything at this point, so they won't do that. The fairy tale that US need hundreds of billions to defend lazy EUropeans is propaganda food for Americans. US military budget finances golden water taps in houses of top 20 US clans which sit in weapon production business. I don't think there is a product with higher profit margin on this planet than a patriot missile or F-35 jet.
Trump is giving them an opportunity to change their ways. They need to pay their bills and stop oppressing their people. And if they don't get straight, we will turn our backs on them and leave them to the communists and the Muslims. America should not wipe their noses a third time.
The fact is those brie munchers could not fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Maybe we should remove our presence from countries who dislike us and let them re-arm.
Our domestic economy isn’t strong enough to self sustain yet. If Drumpf burns bridges with foreign allies, they can and will cripple our economy. Drumpf is playing 3D chess while most US citizens barely understand checkers.
If two major global economies stop backing the US dollar, we crash. It’s that simple. It was inevitable as soon as we left the gold standard. It’s also the main reason that we engage in foreign conflicts that don’t directly benefit the US. We are the guy that owes the bookie a ton of money. Either we do his dirty work until he sees fit to forgive the debt or we can afford to pay him back, or he collects. If he collects, we’re done. Maybe not dead, but we have nothing and we will never again have anything unless we leave the area permanently.
What he doesn't like is its over-reliance on the United States, which continues the largest share of any NATION member. Every NATO member should pay its fair share, and countries are now increasing their contribution.
@Julie07 You are likely right. 5% of GDP is too high. But 4%? Donald Trump will very likely take that, declare victory, and NATO will go on. Poland is already at that level.
Or the 5% "working goal" will get pushed out past his time in office, and Trump will declare victory anyway.
That is how "the Donald" operates. He starts out with a hard stance, and then negotiates downward. "The Art Of The Deal", his own book, explains it. Yes, it was largely ghost-written and totally full of Trump puffery, but it really IS how he operates. That book, along with "The Art Of The Comeback", despite being another book ghostwritten and full of Trump puffery, really ARE insights into his mind and soul. Donald Trump always starts out with a harsh and hard-line stance, but then negotiates down to something less so, often much less so.
For examples, see the various tariffs that were "imposed" in the past, and even now. Tariffs started out high. And later on in the months / years, in exchanges for concessions from the other nation, they were lowered or even disappeared. (See his first term in office 2017-2020 for empirical evidence of this).
Give the man time, he still has three+ years in office! Seriously though, I assume there are still some advisors around him that would tell him how moronic and destructive it would be.
He’s a diaper filling piece of garbage. America wants out of NATO and the UN so it can push an Imperialist agenda. Claim resources from: Canada Greenland Panama Venezuela He’s a criminal and a murderer!!!
cause without nato, russia and china would bomb the shit out of the USA. the usa is the strongest individual country of the planet when it comes to pure fire power. but without nato, it doesn't have enough power to contest brics.
Don't laugh at me, there is an article that allows you to leave NATO after one year. Maybe in the United States you need a vote in Congress or something like that, but since Trump is the king of negotiators, he could easily do it.
What's more, he could simply withdraw his troops and American nuclear weapons from Europe. Who can stop the United States from doing that? No country.
I'm not laughing. Honestly, I have no clue what needs Congressional approval and what doesn't. Trump seems to do whatever he wants. But considering how he keeps flip flopping on tariffs and is buddies with an ex-terrorist, I'm not surprised he can't make his mind up on NATI
To be fair, it's not like Europe could do anything if America did say "You know what, screw you guys. We quit" and stopped doing anything with or for NATO
Yeah, HIM. I call it, pardon my French, "sucking Muslim dick"
"Look at my handsome, beautiful Muslim friend. Look how handsome he is. Have you ever seen a more handsome man? Aside from me? Honestly, he is more beautiful than my wife. He should be in Playgirl, he's so handsome. He smells nice. I know I said they all stink, but not this one. Actually, we might wash each other in the bath later with these, scented oils, that are manufactured in France. I know I said, "America first", but the French make the best scented oils. Actually, I think his country been colonized by France at one point, I don't really know. But that's probably why he's so beautiful. His English is beautiful. Better than my wife's. 🤣
Don't make excuses for him; he hasn't even proposed this to the Senate or anyone else yet. He could also simply withdraw his soldiers and close the bases in Europe, etc., without leaving NATO, thereby emptying it of its substance.

Many Americas would agree with you. Just don’t call later though.
Poppy wants you out of her country. Will you listen to her?
You have to honor your queen that’s poppy the beautiful queen of England
I prefer the title of empress of wales

Or, counting the Cold War, a fourth.
@Curmudgeon Well, there's that.
I don't see how Europe could paralyse the American economy.

Trump likes NATO.
What he doesn't like is its over-reliance on the United States, which continues the largest share of any NATION member. Every NATO member should pay its fair share, and countries are now increasing their contribution.
Because that was NEVER his goal. He just wanted the European nations (and Canada) to pay more of their "fair share".
He asked for 5% of GDP to be spent on defence. That will simply never happen.
@Julie07 You are likely right. 5% of GDP is too high. But 4%? Donald Trump will very likely take that, declare victory, and NATO will go on. Poland is already at that level.

I suspect he will do something similar.

It's not that simple. Apparantly there's a whole process and the other members have to approve. Same reason Turkey hasn't been kicked out of NATO
Don't laugh at me, there is an article that allows you to leave NATO after one year. Maybe in the United States you need a vote in Congress or something like that, but since Trump is the king of negotiators, he could easily do it.

@Julie07 Trump is not against NATO, he just feels that European countries are not paying their fair share to support it.
because is not really his call... and he's not allowed to do so
Well for starters its not his call and it wouldn't take many republicans to vote against it.
Secondly there's the same issue as with Brexit and EU. If you suddenly lose your scapegoat then you have to take responsibility instead.
The USA may need our NATO friends one day. Russia, Iran, Belarus, China and North Korea seem to be getting closer and closer to each other
He still thinks that NATO can still be an effective deterrent for Communist infringement.
Because it's not up to him, the house and Senate have to approve that
Don't make excuses for him; he hasn't even proposed this to the Senate or anyone else yet. He could also simply withdraw his soldiers and close the bases in Europe, etc., without leaving NATO, thereby emptying it of its substance.
He can't do that either. Europeans seem to think he has absolute power here. He doesn't
Trump is a superb negotiator, he is a winner, nothing can stand in his way, he could very well strip NATO of its substance without leaving NATO.
No, that's not how it works
Trump constantly proclaims that he is the best, the greatest, the most handsome, that he has put an end to numerous conflicts, and you want me to believe that he cannot strip NATO of its substance? Seriously?
Crazy lady, that's not how the US government works. Trump can't pull out all the NATO troops, close the bases, etc. without congressional approval.
He can decide to close bases or reduce the presence of soldiers in Europe, maybe not all of them, but he can definitely reduce them.
What's more, he could raise the issue, etc., but he's doing nothing.
Then, since he's so strong, so incredible, according to his own words, he should be able to convince Congress.
Listen here little buddy, it's not going to happen
The POTUS is the commander in chief of the US armed forces. He can absolutely unilaterally withdraw 100% of US military from foreign soil. Biden proved that with his botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. The joint chiefs can and probably would protest, but there’s absolutely nothing that congress could do but b*tch about his decision in hindsight.

@Chazmatazz269 NATO is not Afghanistan, you're comparing apples to oranges here
All he did was force them to pay their “fair share” democrats are always screaming about and stop riding our backs for their defense.
It's amazing that Biden didn't do that.
Because he's an all hat no cowboy, blowhard and Shabbos goy.
His Jewish overlords need war. The fiat system and globohomo policy needs war. There will be no war without America. Nate is a joke.
Oh look another anti semite
We need nato. Trump, while’s he’s an idiot would be 10x’s more if he withdrawals us
What would he do with America's world-wide bases if he left NATO?
That is not his decision to make.
