Why does Trump say he might leave NATO, and what would his goal be?

Yep, Trump plans to leave NATO. Is it to take Greenland by force , Canada by force, Take Cuba , and from NATO countries refusing to help with his illegal war against Iran.

He is leaving NATO because NATO countries wouldn't murder innocent Iranian Children and help with Trump's illegal war.

Pretty much all of the above, and I don't think he wants to be subjected to disapproval of his bad behavior by any of the NATO countries or the people that run those countries. Trump wants to do what he wants to do without anybody interfering or making judgments about his behavior, bad as it is.

Trump is primarily a blowhard, desperate for attention and laudation. Should he actually try to leave NATO, the current legislation would stop him. As would the top brass.

I beg to differ, my friend. I don't think any current legislation is going to stop him from doing anything, because so far, it has not. Even today, he is in our Supreme Court attempting to literally modify our Constitution to his racist liking in regard to birthright citizenship.

Trumpism does best in legal gray zones, has maybe partially even the ability to create them through intimidation and passiveness. But here the law is pretty clear and Trump would not get two thirds of the Senators. His lone declaration would be as valid as his "renaming" of the Gulf of Mexico.

There is actually an amendment to our constitution authorizing birthright citizenship, and it was upheld as recently as about a hundred years ago by our Supreme Court; however, today, despite what I've just told you, our Supreme Court is seriously considering giving Trump what he wants once again.

NATO has been a one way street for decades. The US has bailed out our allies and now when the US needs some assistance it is just a bunch of excuses from our so called allies. If the US leaves NATO it will embolden Russia to not stop with Ukraine. It is the presence of the US that keeps them at bay.

President Trump has said he is serious about leaving it now and the nATO members do not seem to care veery much. I used to think that NATO still was useful but after seeing how nobody wanted to back us up , lets leave them to fend for themselves.

Again, NATO is a defense alliance, not something you call to help clean up your mess.
And so far the only benefactor of a common defense event has been the United States.

@DryGermanGuy as far as I am concerned Iran needed to be put down. Not only for numerous attacks on the US but also they are too unstable and filled with hate to be allowed to have nuclear weapons. Trump is the only President with the courage to do something about it. Everyone will benefit from this and to deny the US the use of air bases and a few mine sweepers is not being a good ally.

President Barack Obama did something about it, he started the first careful steps of diplomacy and achieved a treaty together with other involved countries. Could you imagine that the middle name HUSSEIN!!! does bring an advantage in certain countries?
If Trump would not hate Obama to the point of wanting to destroy all his achievements and had he shown the intellect of building on those first Obama steps, we’ll all be fine right now!
Hell, imagine it a bit further with Trump having been the U. S. President to restart full diplomatic relations with Iran! That would have been the Nobel Peace Price he so desperately craves!

he's not gonna leave nato. the us has the worlds strongest individual military but if the wrong nations get together to attack the usa, they may still lose. Nato is pretty much the live insurance that makes sure that can never happen cause in that arrangement, the usa can't be attacked by a strong enough force to bring them down cause that would require some of the allies to attack as well. but if they aren't allies anymore cause they're not bound in aliance contracts through nato, that life insurance is gone so without nato, usa is vulnerable unless they plan on replacing that alliance with differen partners.

I'm all for leaving NATO, but not for the reasons Trump want's us to. NATO is a terror origination that more harm then good and main purpose is to profit the Military Industrial Complex, we should leave because of this and not because Trump want's to for nefarious reasons. Libya is a great example of NATO doing more harm then good.

Donald Trump threatened military action in Greenland which is a NATO country. He did that before the Iranian war. That made him look terrible. I believe they actually sent soldiers from Germany or France over to Greenland because of Trumps threats.
