What is it with most people having a herd mentality with supporting police officers in the U. S. no matter what?

Most people make excuses for them that they don't for other people. If a police officer treats you like shit , is cocky, etc. here comes the mental gymnastics to defend them. But if someone else acted all high and mighty than people rightfully say they are assholes, but the same energy should be towards police officers.

There is some delusional fantasy, particularly on the right, that police are the lily white defenders of the law, protectors of the peace, etc. and we all live in some 1950's sitcom of a world that never existed. It's a nice idyllic fantasy. That never existed.

In the brutal reality of the world we actually live in, good cops are those things. But as long as there have been a badge and a gun which give men power, there has also been corruption. Cops on the take from the mafia, drug cartels, and pimps. Cops shaking down neighborhood small business owners for protection money. Cops covering up crimes for other cops. Cops planting evidence or lying in court. Cops beating the shit out of black men in the South. Cops murdering people during arrests because the psycho cop gets pissed off. Authoritarian asshole cops beating their wives and kids. Cops stealing money, drugs, and guns from the property room or a crime scene.

That stuff goes on in rural Red State shithole counties and towns and it goes on in big city police departments. It goes on with state cops and town cops.

I've been arrested many times, but I have never had any problem with the cops. They were just doing their job. I broke the law. I knew I broke the law. And I got caught. Simple as that. I was polite to them and they were polite to me.

The people who whine about cops are mostly people who broke the law but don't want to accept the consequences. They are rude to cops and give them a hard time. They don't accept the consequences of that either. What the hell do they expect?

Nothing wrong with that! Wait `til someone beats the piss out of you and the cops you call for help tell you to go take a long walk off a short pier because you don't support them so, why should they support you?

Yes, but many folk are passive-agggressive, quailing to even the meanest (in every sense) authority while being jerks to those they feel beneath their notice.

I know hundreds of cops and I never supported the ones that I felt were abusing the badge.

Ah, then I hope you've seen the difference in cops over the past 20+ years. I used to get fucked with/profiled, but over the course of time have seen more officers protect and actually serve in many areas including 3 different states. Results probably vary.
