The police chief already saw the video and called it "egregious" which let's me know abused and murder happened.
Poor training is one of the main issues, as well as low standards for hiring. Here in Japan, all police are under the jurisdiction of the government. There is one standard for all. Our police must have a college degree. Before they are hired, they are given a psychological test. Training is ten times longer than the average training in the USA. They also have to take training in public relations and civility. In the entire history of our police force, since the 1800's no policeman has shot and killed a person. This is how it should be.

Many have become brainwashed into compliance in place of using their own heads. They follow the system to the letter of the law without ever even questioning what they are following rather it's the right thing or the wrong thing. And look at where things are in today's time many men afraid to speak out or to get get involved in anything so they want to get involved in anything they know if did then they would looked at as suspect and turned on they know that instead of them investigating what was reported they would come for the one that reported it. In other words men in general aren't viewed as good or innocent.

We always seem to see these issues with black citizens... is it statistically black people in confrontations more than other races? Or are these cherry picked for the news? I suspect black citizens are more traumatized by police than other groups and answer above is thus, yes. So if that ends up being true, then have to address that issue.

On the other hand it may be that there was more to the story and that the cops were simply behaving as any human would in such a situation.
Either way, all the power in the world exist in the hands of the police chief and his mayor to control the training, discipline, composition and rules of their police force and yet despite having such uncontested control for 30-40+ years they have not managed to prevent such incidents.
So either it is impossible due to the nature of the issue, or they are incompetent. Either way the people of said city which has been outright majority black since the 80s have not chosen to try anything significantly different. So we should not assume they have a problem with this.
I haven't seen video or much details. Could it be we are seeing the "fruits" of the stupidity of the prior years... hiring of people who really shouldn't be on the police force? How tenured are these cops, what is their character? Takes a special person to do that job and deal with the poorly trained humans we turn out of Public Schools, let alone the media trauma trained ones. In my area, we've had a hard time finding cops in general. Add to it, in some areas, they probably only want black cops since the population would tolerate them better. That narrows the choices.

It's possible they hired criminals or thugs, lowered their standards... we don't know. Maybe they are veterans of police or military? Where you going to find nice patient understanding people to do this job? Maybe the victim knew these guys so ran for his life... a bad move. Generally speaking, police use force and a person is fortunate if it goes with only bruises.
An easy solution to avoid some of this is meet and greets with your local cops. I've met a few of mine...
@Hispanic-Cool-Guy There is much a employer can do to filter and train employees to make such incidents much less likely as should be done among employees regularly involved in violent incidents as police are.
That said if the local leaders could indeed do nothing more to reduce such risk while retaining an effective force. Then such is something that the people thereof should accept as part of the cost of having State funded guards for law enforcement.
The alternative is to abolish the police as they easily could and move back to the original model of citizen enforced laws. This of course requires a well armed citizenry and is useful only for enforcing laws which the same citizenry can consistently have an interest in enforcing.
The only law enforcement officers would then be a handful of serif and their deputes who's job is mostly just to arbitrate, collect, and imprison those soo arrested by the armed citizenry.
You are much more likely under such a non-professional system to see insolent of injustice.
You also are very unlikely to find people enforcing building codes, or food quality standards or really almost any kind of victimless crime.
It really depends on what department, the tribal police suck rocks... but the local Sheriff and deputies are awesome and wonderful.
In the big cities though, those police suck... they will stop or arrest me simply because I'm not white.
They don't care if your doing anything wrong, or if your guilty or not, they just have a system, arrest people and let the others sort it out.

Innocent until proven guilty…. unless cops decide you aren’t compliant enough and just give you the death penalty on the spot. Just a crazy system we have going. Very sad.
1. American police have been militarized for decades. There was book I read some years ago ( the title escapes me now) that spoke about how the government intentionally militarized the police in the US with the express purpose of intimidating the population. This goes back to the war on drugs. Police are trained to see the people as the enemy and often see the communities they police as battle grounds. This also leads to American cops being hyper-over the top aggressive. The number of Americans that have been killed , abused by cops in US is legion. The ones we see on the news or on you tube are the ones caught on film. Most Americans are scared of the police not because of any illegal activity but because they are aware that most cops in the US are a bit off in the head. I have been pulled over a few times in the past years for some minor traffic violations - when this happens I change my behavior for the few minutes that I interact with the cop ; I speak in a polite even tone of voice, I don't make any sudden movements - I don't start mouthing off to them. I have never been arrested before and if you see me you would probably think I am an accountant or some kind of book nerd. I have two degrees and have never been arrested and I still don't trust the cops.
2. The type of people they recruit are not always the sharpest tools in the shed. There was a guy some years ago that sued one police dept because he as disqualified for the academy due to having very high test scores. I have read that police academies veer away from people that are too smart or educated. Also , a lot of cops are just high strung people that have authoritarian tendencies - "obey me or else" . Many cops also have violent tendencies in general - a huge number of them have domestic violence issues.
This is not a good combination and tends to lead to a lot of violence against citizens.
There is evil everywhere! We used to say "going postal" after a postal worker shot up a post office.. Today those words mean nothing. There are 661,000 officers in the USA, and 5 represents only 0.0001 percent of the officers in the USA, there are Evil teachers, and evil farm workers, yet not all are bad, there are Evil illegal immigrants, yet we label everyone as evil.. There are a majority, well trained, compassionate fair officers out there. Cops don't receive enough de-escalation training, they have the blinders on to other methods to calm the situation. All the training funnels them towards arrest.
I understand wanting to get home safely and there are some unsavory people out there, but you can't assume someone is bad just because they are nervous. It's totally natural to be nervous when police start asking questions because your put in a defensive situation. Then it tends to go downhill from that point on...
What are "American Cops"? There is no such thing there are 600+ thousand LEO's in uniforms working for 15,000+ different elected local or State officials.
Institutionally speaking there is no such thing as an "American cop". The concept itself is unconstitutional and still very unusual with 90%+ of all such LEO being local or State employees.
The cops that did this worked for the city of Memphis, Tennessee.
A city that has been run exclusively by democrats (mostly black) for 30-40+ years or longer. So If those officers are indeed to blame for said incident then it was democrats who poorly hired, commanded, trained, and disciplined them.
Democrats elected by an outright majority black electorate for the last 30+ years.
Here's a tip: don't break any laws and you won't get stopped by the police. If you are stopped by the police, do not get confrontational with them and make them feel threatened. Got any facts or stats to back up your claim that 1% of cops are bad? If not, your argument about the number of bad cops is 100% baseless. The only actual facts we have to make a case that some cops are bad are events like the one that got your panties in a wad THIS time, and of course all the dozens of other times you’ve cherry picked time after time after time on GAG. You give the impression that’s all you do…scour the daily news looking for stories to justify your hatred of cops.

You don’t bother posting about all the thousands of other good things cops do every day. Why is that? Does it happen? Are there bad cops who behave badly? Of course, and the case of Tyre Nichols may indeed be an example of that. But we’ll have to wait until the facts are exposed to know.
Until then, maybe you should consider writing about how doing what cops ask instead of fleeing the scene or resisting arrest would save many lives, very likely including that of Tyre Nichols. @Wraith_Cemetery I agree 100%. There are more than a few people in the US who just despise police and want to make them look as bad as possible, but they don't have the honesty to acknowledge that the VAST majority of cops are good people and public servants who put their lives at risk every day.
They also turn a blind eye to the fact that in almost every one of these cases the suspect was trying to hurt of kill the cops or violently resisting arrest. If these people critical of police spent half as much time trying to convince people that's why most of them get hurt or killed by police, they could actually do something useful with their passion. As it is, all they do is make people more afraid of cops, encouraging them to resist/flee and causing more of these incidents than there would be otherwise.
