No joke, when I was no more than 5 years old, I can remember my mother telling my younger brother and me, "If you kids get thrown in jail you can expect to stay there because I won't be bailing you out. Because if you are in jail it means that you deserve to be. When a police officer tells you to do something you say, 'Yes, sir" and you do it!"

To be sure, beyond wondering how I would end up as the first second grader incarcerated on Alcatraz, speaking at just a personal level, I have no sympathy for this notion that someone is a delicate little snowflake who deserves to have his feelings given a higher regard than the rule of law. It is utterly alien to everything I was raised with.

The police have a risky job, their lives are on the line at every stop, and they have no way of knowing who you are or what you are doing. They deserve deference and if they go outside the bounds, you have redress for that in a court of law.

The current popular attitude toward law enforcement is an outgrowth of a sniveling, self-absorbed and self-pitying culture that too easily takes for granted the difficult task of maintaining a stable social order. "The policeman was mean to me!" Good grief.

Do they get unfairly treated? Absolutely. It is the sign of a self-satisfied and sanctimonious age that too easily takes for granted its safety and those who assure us.

In 1977, after nearly two decades of a culture that had taken to calling the police, "pigs" and that thought the criminal was a victim of society rather than a victimizer, Gallup took a poll. It showed that 72% of all women - and 92% of African-American women - of all classes and incomes and all the rest, did not feel safe walking in their neighborhoods at night.

Are the majority of cops "bad"? Of course not, but Americans, as was said of the French kings, "Forget nothing and learn nothing." Suffice to say, we are about to repeat history.

It is so routine for officers to lie, to fabricate evidence, to exaggerate or escalate situations. Only to face no repercussions. But worse, it builds a culture where police are either afraid or too corrupt to turn over officers in, since most likely they will be the ones punished.

They don't get paid enough to do it for the money, they don't have much more power than the guy at the parking garage, and they are literally expected to be ready to do their job 24/7 wherever they go.

Most of them give up lot to try to help the rest of us.

Some of them just like to ruin other peoples lives.

And then there is a very small percent who just really want everyone to follow the rules because breaking the rules is wrong and someone has to make sure nobody breaks the rules.

I kind of prefer the second type to the third, but I'd say most of them are good people.

I can't answer that. I don't think the majority are bad people per say, however Michael Malice has pointed out that all cops are by definition criminals as they enforce illegal laws (gun bans for example), and break their oaths to uphold the constitution.

So are they bad as people? No. Do they enforce laws that are entirely illegal? Absolutely all the time.

No. I believe most of them are in it for a stable and fulfilling career that has overall decent pay, retirement, and benefits (all, of course, depending on where they are).

No, not even close. Almost all of them are great, however it's a different story when we go into some federal agencies, especially the ATF. You can be a good redcoat but you're still a redcoat and the ATF works exclusively to violate people's constitutional rights, and it's targeted at good people who haven't even had a speeding ticket in their life rather than gangs and cartels or antifa (they work with both).

In italy they are friendly, they would never hurt ayone without a specific reason, usually they handle drunk people and try to talk some sense into them. I Saw that in US people tackle you to the ground for a stolen candy... that's absurd lol.

Not necessarily bad, but not worthwhile nor do they tend to help the communities they claim to serve and protect. They can and routinely do cause serious harm to people, and they do ruin lives of innocent people without repercussions.

Just like everything else, it just takes a few to make them all look bad. Some years ago they did a study and found that a majority of people that become officers were bullied as kids, or left out or the last picked in group activities. Not a good mental thing for someone n that position.

No. But the majority of cops fail to keep the bad ones honest. So they are to blame, too. Like the three cops standing by as Chauvin choked the life out of a handcuffed suspect.
