Why not have freedom of expression and press? So what if someone says "Khomeni is a dingbat"... who cares?
Is it fear? pride?
It casts the world against them. It's unwise.

They also just executed a Swedish person they say was a spy.

Why? Because the powers that be are threatened by the truth or by anyone who disagrees with them.
It's the same reason that Scumpie believes there should be NO criticism of the President allowed ---- um, so long as HE is the President. LOL Instead of executions, he'll try to get you fired, take your livelihood, or ruin you in some other way. He's a petty little bitch.
When you have weak, little men in power, allowing dissent is always a threat. They know it, so they suppress it. When you have a state run religion, you can cite the dissenters who oppose you as "opposing the will of God" because you are God's chosen representative, and opposition is blasphemy punishable by death.
A regime that controls the courts will never like being badmouthed. Definitely pride.
For the same reason, the USA puts people in prison for revealing the truth the USA wants hidden.
Control? I don't think we are quite as bad. Various people speak out against the presidents policies and they are free. But it is more severe control now than before.
Because free expression is a threat to their power.

Because when you build your power base on vile and tyrannical principles, free speech is your greatest enemy
That’s why I laugh when people in the US say that Trump is evil.
By the world’s standard Trump, and any other democratic president are a bunch of puppy dogs
Tyrants like the Islamic state, like North Korea, like China
These are the true monsters.
People who have total disregard for human life and welfare
And only prioritize their own marching orders to which everyone has to adhere without protest or even discussion
Compared to other regimes, you're correct, Trump is mild. I'm not going to be offering praise that "he's only a 2 on a scale of 20 when it comes to evil", because case in point, he still registers on the scale. He's certainly trying to find out how much "free speech" can be squelched. When backers own the media outlets, that goes a long way for manipulating your narrative. His masters are the truly evil ones, in my opinion. It will just take a while to become N. Korea.
I think it is a belief that those who appose the rule of god should be punished similar to how we used to punish for using the lords name in vein until the late 18th century. They believe that there's is the rightous path to glory and that all others are to be condemned to hell. Something to that effect. They aren't the only ones to do it just the most recent example.
Same reason the UK jails people for three years for a tweet.
The narrative must be protected, at all costs. The greater the terror in the regime losing its grip, the more severe the punishment for rebellion.
So Iran executes anyone who protests against anything? Sounds like more U. S. propaganda to justify regime change.
Does free expression include rioting, violence, and fire bombing mosques?
Didn't say that but can be interpreted. They certainly appear to have done that in regards to the wrestler, but what do I really know? They certainly seem very willing to execute people.
no it does not. That's the thing, it is distinctly possible when the "extreme" looking people at the top are taken out, the even more extreme ones take over. That's a real risk of getting "worse" people and what looks extreme to us is actually rational.
Some Brits doing a motorcycle tour through Iran are in prison as well, don't know their fate. It only takes "being accused" to end up in a bad place.
In summary: It does appear, they are very controlling. Whether that is good or bad, is a question for the student to answer and time to address.
Secularism is division and division crumbles societies.
Are you seriously asking why a known (religious) dictatorship acts like a dictatorship?
What is their thinking. It seems screwed up. So many complain about Trump, and good reasons for some, but he isn't hanging people in the street that speak against him. What is their thinking?
In Iraq... Hussain ruled with an iron fist. When he was removed, it was "wild kingdom".
I wonder if we get the same result in Iran... eg. worse.
Of course, it’s screwed up, like it is in all dictatorships, left, right or religious. The system will go to any means to keep clinging on to power.
By the way, Libya is even worse than Iraq. But Iran is a very homogeneous society, I would assume they would manage a regime change better than Iraq or Libya.
Because the narrative that permits them to stay in power is ultimately based on lies.
It's a backwards theocracy which permits no dissent, which is punishable by death.
The Iranian Regime is Evil, and that is why the Iranian Regime is killing so much people.
Geez.. it's kinda like Jews establishing laws against people being anti Jew.
because they're Iran...
slight correction... because they're the Iranian "government"
