A Marriage is supposed to be two people working together to provide for and support a family. If you go by the old style narrative of Man brings home the bacon and Woman takes care of the kids, A fertile wife can easily put you in a situation where debt becomes overwhelming. Not so much in ancient times but in this society, yes. With birth control availability it really should not be a problem. "When I was a child I acted like a child, Now I am a man and have put down my childish ways". So is affluency allowing us to resist grow up?
Because such a high percentage of people are not worth being married to or are not intelligent enough to choose/attract someone they are compatible with. When the building blocks are bad, the house built with them will also be bad. A marriage can only be as good as the quality of the two people involved.
