I took tax accounting in college but the laws change so much from year to year that only a pro can stay current. Since we retired our taxes are not as complex as they were so I find Turbo Tax sufficient for my needs.

I'm a finance professional and pretty well versed in taxes. But you are absolutely correct that the changing laws are an important part of the failure of the current tax system, not only because they make it impossible for an average tax payer to understand exactly how much they owe which is a violation of their liberty, but because they make responsible financial planning impossible since you never know what the tax burden will be in the future. That is a ball and chain on not only individuals but businesses too. It is terrible for the economy.
