My way or the high way. Agree or Disagree?

For those that don't quite get what it means: it's an expression that is used to express the idea that in life we always want it our way and if that doesn't happen we walk away or treat another person poorly because they don't give us what we want.

Good luck with "my way or the highway" as a life strategy. You're gonna be pretty lonely. Oh, there are instances where that mindset may be necessary. A crisis where time is extremely constrained and saving lives rather than feelings is the priority in the moment. Someone has to step up and make the decisions... and live with the consequences. In that sort of scenario most people are grateful to relinquish control. But that should be a very rare occurence.

If you want to lead people, 95% of the time you'll do better to involve them in the solution and coach/teach rather than dictating the solution. Counsel rather than condemn after a failure. Prove you're worthy of respect and people will follow you. Prove you're a loudmouthed asshole and people will hang you out to dry just to watch you fail. 😂

I've always thought the goal was to build a high performance team. When you dictate everyone's actions and criticize every failure, you take away their chance to think, learn, and grow. People who do that then typically complain about their team rather than their own leadership. I've never wanted to be THAT guy.

I think it’s good to have boundaries and not be a pushover most of the time


But it’s also dangerous to he too stubborn and single minded that we’re unable to recognize the wisdom in someone else’s ideas when we see it


And flexible is a lot harder to achieve than stubbornness.
So “my way or the highway” is not a sign of strength of character

I almost always prefer doing things my own way, but if I genuinely think someone has more knowledge in a field, I'm definitely open to suggestions on how to accomplish whatever the task may be. For example, I love the idea of DIY, but I haven't done many projects myself, so I'm definitely no expert. If there is someone with much more experience, I'm open to their advice.

I think that's the key with anything though. Someone has to prove they have more knowledge than me in the specific field. But even then, I can be pretty stubborn sometimes.

That mindset might feel strong, but it usually shuts down understanding.

Real strength is being able to stand your ground while still making space for other perspectives.

If everything has to be your way, it’s not leadership , it’s control.

Compromise is almost always a less than optimal solution for one or all parties involved. People have to wrap their heads around the concept that a 75% solution is better than nothing. A fast 75% solution means you can move on to the next thing. Some people have a really hard time focusing on the larger picture and spend their lives accomplishing very little.

@OneViewpoint Great idea, however when the fuck did the US ever have a75% agreeing on anything? If I can recall correctly from High School US History class at that time I believe was President Roosevelt shortly before we got into WW2.

Interesting input but who's talking about US politics? I assume that thegreenyogi being from Italia and her usual questions being targeted at shared human experiences, that she was looking for a broader view of human interactions and relationships in general. So that's how I answered. I didn't have the US or politics in mind specifically. Although those are certainly ways people interact. I was thinking about romantic relationships, leadership in career situations, plus friends and family. Not batshit crazy US partisan politics. That's more of a question about mental health.

Maybe thegreenyogi can chime in and tell us what the intent of the question is.

@OneViewpoint I was referring to life overall which can enter the sphere of relationships. I try to steer away from politics in my questions because things can get heated and strong words are used that can become offensive but if you can have a positive healthy debate you can apply my question to politics if you wish.

I've known people that other people have said things like - he's one of those people, it's either their way or the highway.

I can say I'm definitely guilty of this sometime more then others. When I find myself not able to agree to disagree with someone it's best to go off by myself and reflect or just find something else to do.
