Why aren't boats using the Oman side?

1. The strait is 24 miles wide, so median division, gives 12 miles on Oman side , so why are boats not using that side?

A few factors. First there are islands in the strait which are controlled by Iran even though ownership is disputed.

Second the depth is quite shallow so it is not a matter of shifting closer to the Oman side if the depth will not support the draught of tankers. In anyway it won't be honored by Iran.

Thirdly anti-ship missiles do not have to be launched in the proximity of the strait if their range is sufficient and Iran has 300 km and 700 km missile and could reach into the Indian Ocean. Iran has a long coastline and more launch points than marked on the map.

In general vessels do have a right of innocent passage, so it does look like Iran needs a few more bombing runs before it will learn some manners.
