I suppose it goes all the way back to elementary school, but the core reason as to why some kids specifically target beauty or the lack of seems unclear to me. Maybe because some kids can master early on where to strike to hurt? Maybe because their parents are teaching them that, directly or indirectly?

Yes, I suppose so, but being honest, we all do it behind closed doors and amongst our most trusted confidants. I think the general rule of thumb is only to do it to people with bad character, or only with family or very best friends or partners, if you must. It's not cool to spread gossip.
