So basically some scientists found rocks with man made plastic inside. Seemingly happening by plastics becoming dense enough to fall to the ocean floor, where the pressure of the ocean makes it more and more dense and then become part of the ocean floor and I don't really get what happens after that, I thought rocks took thousands of years to make but apparently not.

Apparently they fuck with the pH balance of water too. Which I guess is probably not good for reefs right?

I'm not a major tree hugger but there's something that kind of irks me about the thought of 2 thousand years from now there's gonna be some person going "and the earliest evidence of the plastic era which saw a major boom in technology is marked by the presence of plastics in rock; the basis of our societies construction methods today"

When it comes to plastic & get annoyed when I go to the grocery store. You have plastic containers, you have plastic packaging, you have plastic this, plastic that but when you go up to the register they give you fucking paper bags because some joker at city hall did alway with plastic bags thinking that they will save the environment.

I love with it rains & I love seeing people’s paper bags bust & all their shit falls out.

As for the fossil record I had no idea however there are so many microplastics in the water & it’s only getting worse. Ok I’m annoyed.

@Static_In_The_Attic. That's such a good point about grocery bags and all the products that are packaged in plastic. And the politicians always target consumers but NEVER crack down on plastic packaging.

It's like the way they try to coerce people into buying electric vehicles to minimize the burning of gasoline. But the mining, processing and transporting of materials for batteries, and the production of electric vehicles uses more hydrocarbons than all the gas-powered cars put together. Not to mention the fact that electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels.

I wish plastic was never invented. And it should have been banned in all countries ages ago after we found out what it does to the environment and our bodies. But humans are too stupid to give a fuck. I try my best not to use plastic, but it's impossible to change things as one person when the majority of the world is using it.

To this day, 400 to 460 metric tons of plastic are produced each year. And around 11 to 12 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year.

The worst part is, we definitely have the means to get by without plastic, but people are lazy and pathetic.

So let me get this straight, we take "fossil fuels" (crude oil) out of the ground and refine them into their constituent parts and polymerize them into a useful product we call "plastic" for marketing purposes, and when it returns to the ground and becomes "fossil fuel" again you some how have a problem with this? Thousands of gallons of oil naturally leaks out the seabed, it's quickly broken down by bacteria. But plastic never breaks down, it's not part of the natural process and does incredible harm. But let's not let facts get in the way of your political bias.

Crude oil just like plastic which is made from crude oil in the environment gradually gets degraded by UV radiation and oxidation. This is why people even care about microplastics in their water for example because plastic does break down. The same goes for crude oil in their water wells. A liquid can be diluted in water faster than a solid, but the material is still there none the less.

Isolated how? I don't really get what you're arguing? If rocks with plastic in them like the pictures show then it kind of implies the rocks and plastic are mixing at a lower temperature than what would make the plastic sublimate from solid to gas.

Apparently the plastic restructure into a "new kind of mineral" they also mentioned oil being able to leak out from the plastic.

If they are finding it buried deep in rock formations and extracting it, then it is encased in that layer of stone just as crude oil formations are encased in stone, thus isolated until mined. Plastics like polypropylene for example are just repeating chains of propylene that are bonded together. So when they degrade, propylene will separate. Propylene is a component of crude oil. It's refined from naptha. So the plastic leaking oil would be the same as any other oil deposit encased in rock that contains propylene, minus all the other chemicals that are part of crude oil.

That's my initial point, is that it is just becoming a fossil fuel deposit again. We extracted it from a fossil fuel deposit by breaking open rock and pumping out crude oil. We refined it and used it as plastic for a human use. Then it was returned to the ground and through pressure and over time it was re-encased in rock and has started to degrade back to propylene or a "fossil fuel" (hydrocarbon).

This is one ingredient in a crude oil mixture.



This is that same molecule repeating, otherwise known as plastic. When you break the bounds it returns to the initial ingredient found in oil.

Specifically when it comes to polypropylene plastics you might get gas deposits encased in the rock of propylene over time, or you might get a viscus liquid propylene glycol if it goes through hydrogenolysis.

Another possible liquid that could be oozing out of it would obviously be propylene oxide as I mentioned oxidation earlier. I don't know all the details of your piece of plastic/rock, but I assume it was buried in sediment, which would have water in it clay/limestone, so you end up with hydrogen ions and hydroxyl group under pressure making both reactions possible.

In the ocean you'd have active chlorine species like hypochlorous acid which could react with it to oxidize it.
