Why do small towns seem to have so many police officers and cars?

Like towns that are 6 square miles and 15,000 people or less and they have like 35 police cars sitting at the police station. I can't make it 2 miles to McDonald's without seeing at least 3 city cops and 1 county sheriff on the way there.

There usually are not many "police" in small towns, you tend to have county "sheriffs". The town might have 5 police cars to deal with crime in the city boundaries, but the sheriffs department is responsible for crime across the entire country and in the unincorporated areas of the county that stretch on for hundreds of square miles where city police are not available.

The Sheriffs offices are generally located outside of the city limits where there are municipal police. Thus they may be in a small town or just outside of a small town away from larger cities, but be responsible for the entire county. The average county size in the USA is 1,208.38 square miles.

So the "small towns" tend to watch after the entire county, where as the cities just watch after themselves.

It is not like that where I live. I live in a town of about 15,000 people and there are 30 police officers and 5 cruisers. They are usually in places visible from the road unless they are trying to nab people from going through stop signs or are running a speed trap someplace.

People defend themselves around here. Someone shot a guy in their front yard not too long ago. The cops aren't around to help you lol.
