In America, our standard size for a wooden board is a 2 by 4. That means, it's 2 inches thick by 4 inches wide. What are these called in Europe?

After the great depression and entertaining world wars 2 with sending young men as soldiers usa was expanding with relatively easy with our larger land mass free from trench warfare.

So our building code was made for fast, easy learning mass production. You got 1000s of house to make and make it quick.

Our houses are build with bricks, clay tiles and/or concrete. There is no standard wooden board. If you limit the question to roof construction, the type of rafter depends on the architectural necessities. I would say there are easily ten different standard sizes.

In modern USA our building standards was modified with majority of working men fighting ww2. Lower availability of skill craftsmanship created our houses for the boomers today. Economic boomers for them.

My main question is are their larger difference in reconstruct areas vs more non damaged areas from ww2?

Or is the difference in the eastern block vs western block reconstruction? By today standards.

Yeah, I get what you mean. The rebuilt areas from the 1950s/1960s are usually recognizable. Not necessarily because of lower build quality (although that happened also), but because of the cookie cutter apartment blocks, that had to be built quickly. Many of those quarters/suburbs look the same. In the East even more than the West, because the East really established "conveyor belt" construction with standardized concrete elements. Really not bad apartments to live in, but dear god, what a depressing architecture to look at.

that's a good question. A 2X4 is actually 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches. My summer home is over a hundred years old and it is literally made from real 2X4s
