Without NATO threatening Russia's borders, Russia would have no reason to attack anybody. That includes Ukraine.
Russia isn't the USSR. It's not trying to spread communist ideology. It doesn't need more territory. It doesn't have imperial designs like the U. S.

What would the U. S. do if Russia engineered a coup and installed a pro-Russian government in Mexico, then started building military bases and missiles near the U. S. border? Not that Russia would do that. But that's what the U. S. does to Russia and other countries.

No. The CIA engineered a coup in 2014. At that point, Ukraine adopted "de-russification" policies and began taking actions against Russian-speaking populations.
Ukrainian Nazi activists became hostile toward Russian and Russian-speaking Ukrainians and pro-federalists.
The Ukrainian military mobilized against Crimea and Donbas.

Russia was never going to relinquish its naval base in Crimea, which had been Russian for as long as the USA has existed. The people of Crimea voted to remain with Russia.

The people in Donbas begged Russia to save them from slaughter and voted to succeed from Ukraine and return to Russia.

In 2019, Zelenskyy began petitioning to become part of NATO.

Russia attempted to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine from 2014 to 2022 but the U. S. and NATO countries encouraged Ukraine to reject peace.

While there were no American military bases, there were American chemical and biological weapons facilities and America was supplying Ukraine with weapons.

When all other options failed, Russia launched a limited military action to protect Crimea and Donbas. When Ukraine decided to engage in full war, Russia began pulverizing its military infrastructure.

But it was never Russia's intent to annex all of Ukraine or harm Ukrainian civilians. It always hoped to reach an acceptable peace agreement that eliminated Nazis, kept NATO away from its border, and maintained cordial relations with the Ukrainian people.

Russia is split into several factions, The "Government", The Military, The Oligarchs and The People. As we have seen in the ukraine war they have most likely learned there lesson, attacking a country on its border without any realistic logistical strategy is pure madness. You need several things to attacl another country, Direction from the government, The Army needs proper positioning and command, Financial support from the rich/banks and people to go to war from the masses. So far putin fcked with all those sections and he's almost lost control of russia. So maybe, he might attack 😭🤣😂
