I think Trump opposes wind power and wind turbines because he gets so much bribe money from the oil industry.

During an energy crisis, Trump's administration is paying people not to implement renewable sources of energy. It's because the money comes from the fossil fuel companies.

Because they do not work, least of all in winter when they are needed most they freeze up, require huge maintenance costs, and don't pay for themselves in their entire lifetimes.

An awful lot of companies and people are installing these things all over the place given the fact they don't work so well as you maintain. That being said, I am curious about the icing issue. How would you ever de-ice something like this short of maybe some electrical coils in the blades?

It only takes one Severe thunderstorm or a hurricane to destroy the things too. they talk about adding wind turbine farms off new york harbor and other east coast locations, but even a Category 1 or 2 hurricane will destroy an entire wind turbine farm. It's not economical at all.

If it was really not economical, nobody would it's build or install these things. If they are so bad economically then how do you explain the proliferation of them?

It's a scam. They provably do not pay for themselves in less than about 30 years.

If you have to insure them, then you're losing even more money to pay for insurance and doubling the buy-back time yet again. you're better off investing in collectible card games than you are wind or solar power. Some of my trading cards went from $20 each 20 years ago, to over $700 each in that time span, while a wind turbine provably needs 30 years to pay for itself one time even under ideal conditions.

You really should look at the payback metrics on these things before deciding that it takes them 30 years or more for paybacks. They also make a great insurance deduction.

Please explain why it is that people keep paying for the land and buying and installing these things if they're so terrible.

Because they are fucking uneducated. I've done the research on them. I used to th ink they were worth it too, but they are not, and neither are solar panels. just a few years ago, a multi-billion dollar solar farm in Texas got destroyed by a hail storm one year after installation. Insurance isn't "free," guy, someone is paying for it and it adds to losses when major storms hit. It takes a minimum of t5 years for a solar panel to pay for itself, not counting the batteries, wires, and the cost of the land itself.

So, your answer as to why people keep investing in these technologies and spending literally millions of dollars on these things is that they are uneducated? Seriously?

I think that's a very weak explanation. People aren't that stupid. At least not everyone is that stupid, and people with that amount of money are probably getting good advice from other smart people.

If this actually worked, why doesn't the government itself invest in it?

Louisiana stopped investing in its incentive programs for wind and solar, because they found out it didn't work. The government used to pay up to 75% of the cost of installation for wind and solar programs, and they stopped doing it because the installation simply never pays for itself.

Is that why they stopped investing, or was it because of political reasons?

Commercial Revenue: A 1 MW turbine can generate roughly $480 per day, translating to roughly $20 per hour. However, larger 2-3 MW turbines are more common, driving higher returns. Daily Profitability: According to 2025 industry data, a 2 MW onshore wind turbine can generate between $3,000 and $5,000 in daily net profit. Factors Influencing Return: The income is heavily reliant on wind speed (capacity factor, often 35-50% for onshore), electricity prices, and maintenance costs.

It costs 16-23 cents per kilowatt hour to generate electricity using wind power as opposed to 6.5 cents per kilowatt hour to generate electricity using natural gas.

@strateguy632 these things do not break in high winds if they are properly feathered, which is an automatic procedure. It doesn't require a human being to do this. Moreover, they are made from expensive materials - Wind turbine blades are primarily constructed from composite materials, mainly fiberglass (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) and carbon fiber. These are layered with resins (like epoxy or polyester) for strength and rigidity. Modern, larger blades often incorporate carbon fiber, balsa wood, or specialized foam for added stiffness and lighter weight.

Aircraft propeller blades do not break in high winds, and neither do the ones on wind turbines.

Yeah, we all know there aren't very many of them for that reason:

As of January 2022, the U. S. Wind Turbine Database (USWTDB) contains more than 70,800 turbines. These turbines have all been constructed since 1980 in approximately 1,500 wind power projects spanning at least 44 states (plus Puerto Rico and Guam).
