“An eye for an eye”; if someone subjected one or more others to prolonged and/or severe suffering, they should suffer the same.
Any scenario in which we can be reasonably certain that someone has information that would lead to saving or otherwise protecting innocent victims from serious injury, illness or death.
That one gets tricky for a lot of the same reasons capital punishment is tricky. If the person you torture doesn’t actually have the information you think they have, the torturer becomes the villain. That gray area between somewhat certain and absolutely certain leaves a lot of room for the most egregious human errors.
The road to Hell really is paved with good intentions.
Nothing as far as I can tell. You can only go so far without breaking yourself. If you torture you become a torturer. You're victim will suffer but you will cange yourself into something less than you were. Killing I can understand, life forces that on us whether we want it or not. Hands free of blood are a luxury sometimes. But a petty and premeditated unnecessary sadistic act such as torture is something else. That puts you in with the KGB or the Stasi. More like a dead AI than a man. A ghoul that belongs in horror fiction.
I want to say none given its a human right but it can be a necessary evil in some scenarios. If a person is withholding the location of someone in danger. Or information that could save someone's life. But it is a slippery slope... cause who decides? I don’t like arguing from consequentialism, because it is easy to abuse.
I remember this dilemma being played out on lost. Sayid tortured Sawyer because they thought he was withholding Shannon's asthma medicine. I was very torn over this, but understood both sides.
What are your thoughts?
Well, imagine one of your loved ones is beaten until they're disabled and then also suffers from amnesia because of the aftershock. Do you think just putting the assaulter in jail suffices?
What about in the case where one of your loved ones has been sex trafficked, and you find someone who was involved in the process? Even a quick death isn't enough punishment for that.
Those are just the first things that came to mind, but I think you get where I stand based on that.
Yeah I get it. I don't like torture, but a quick death or jail time definitely doesn't suffice in those scenarios.

Most of them.
That’s why it’s always been a thing
Recently we started demonizing it and getting outraged by it but it’s unnatural
If someone kidnapped your daughter in Paris, you would strap them to a chair, out two metal rods in their thighs and plug em into the power grid through the wall socket
To get information that will save lives.
I guess that covers a wide area.
None...
even if "necessary" it was a necessary evil... and not a justified act
If somebody threatens my family/
